When to perform Break/Rout

Post by sgt.steinerbtinternet.com »

Hi

Query came up in game yesterday

I declare charge against enemy unit in Assault Phase.
The enemy is already Wavering and fails Cohesion test (for being charged whilst Wavering)
When does the Break outcome movement occur ? immediately during Assault Phase ? or during Combat Phase ? before or after Contact is made (as Contact against a Broken unit would destroy it out right)

Also if in the above for some reason the Charging unit fails to make contact (eg due to Defensive fire from another unit) would the Broken unit actually move or does it just sit broken in place and not perform any Rout move until its next Movement Phase ?

We were bit confused by sequence of playing not stating that Outcome Moves occur in the Assault Phase whereas Fire Phase does mention their occurrence in that phase

Cheers

the attacker declares a charge.

The wavering defender would test for being charged. Its still unclear if a successful intercept will cancel this test or not as the rules state a successful intercept cancels the charge so the target should not have to take the test. (intercepts occur before the charger moves) Something that will hopefully get a definite answer in V2.

If the wavering unit fails the test for being charged they rout immediately. The chargers will either move their full move towards their initial target, or may switch to a new target that is within 2 MU of the original charge path.

The only time broken troops are destroyed is if foot break when fighting mounted in close combat. The cavalry is already there so no chance for the foot to get away and possibly reform

p. 32: last bullet above Defensive Fire:

"The original target of an assault does not have to make any of the otherwise compulsory tests for being assaulted if all of the assaulting units fail to make contact because of an interception."

This would suggest that if you assault but are stopped by defensive fire, the original target would still test.

That's how we play it but others have argued here on the forums that the target still tests.
