References for learning to script?

Can anyone recommend some references for learning to script?

I don't even know where to start, as I'm an old fart and didn't grow up with computers... (Heck, I don't even know what it's called except "scripting" - isn't there a name for the language?) I've tried figuring it out by opening .BSF and .BAM files, but I haven't got a clue what I'm looking at. I've read the wiki but it seems mostly to just say "you can do this if you want to, but creating VC, achievements, reinforcements, etc. are already covered in the plugins in the editor..."

Maybe a "Dummies" book? A website?

Maybe somebody has a file they're willing to share and can include a "guide" explaining what the lines mean and do?

Anything? Somebody?
