Toggle deployment mode?

For some reason I am continually befuddled and confused by the three options for deployment mode in the editor. I understand that one option is for an "unchangeable" placement on the map, a second option allows you to redeploy the unit at game start within some unspecified area (presumably within it's LOS..?), and the third option...ummmm...I don't know...

1. What exactly are the three different deployment options?
2. Which icon goes with which option? Tank sitting on a red square means "unchangeable" starting location, right? Tank sitting on a square with four red arrows projecting from it means...? Two tanks, one on a red square and one on a blue square with blue arrows projecting from it means...?
3. Does toggling the unit "fixed" or "not fixed" effect the result of each (or any) of these options?

I've tried to figure this out by trial-and-error and I just keep getting confused.

The options are for no deployment, deployment for one side only, and deployment for both sides (obv MP only) IIRC.

The fixed unit options just denote which units are available for optional purchase at the force selection screen.

Ahhhhh! That makes perfect sense now... I was thinking about it only from the SP point of view.

Follow up question: Deployment mode is applicable to entire force, not to individual units, right? I can't place one until with mode "no deployment" and another unit with mode "deployment", can I?

I know, the answer is "script it"... Is there a book or something I can buy to learn scripting? I've read the wikis and the posts and looked at .BSF files and I can't figure out what the hell I'm doing...
