Hello everyone,
I'm new to FoG, but not to wargaming. I have some questions.....
The rules tell us that the basing for 25-28mm is 60x20mm for Heavy Foot,
60x30mm for Medium Foot,
and
60x30mm for Light Foot.
Why is it that the stands with less figures (2, 3 -or 4) get bigger -or deeper bases and stands with more figures (4) get the smaller -or shallower bases?
My Eureka Miniatures Greek Hoplites are a large 28mm miniature and the base of the miniature itself is exactly 20mm deep.
My real question:
Is it a big deal if my HF base is 22mm or say 24mm deep? Will it throw things off game-wise if my opponent has the standard 20mm depth for HF?
(I want to go all out and make some realistic looking bases for these guys and could use a little more room.)
Cheers,
Rick

The base depth is a function of the original formations - close order foot were tighter in their depth than loose order foot, who in turn were more dense than open order foot. So the base depth is supposed to show that they are spread out a bit more. As for the depth of the bases, the rulebook itself says that depth doesn't matter as much, just so the width is to standard - see page 127.

I would like to rise a new question concerning basing. In DBM there was the option to double base some troops, and even it was compulsory for others. I would like to know how you manage to play that in the tabletop with FoG. For example, I have my hoplites double based as I think they look better and it allows me to make some little dioramas. I have also thought to double base my pikement because it would be easier to let the pikes get through friendly pikemen if they are based together.
In game terms, how do you play them? i have thought to have one normal base of hoptlites and substitute it whenever it is needed.
