Truck killing

Post by HobbesACW »

I'm chasing around the map at the moment trying to destroy ten trucks to achieve the victory conditions. Not a wargame objective that I enjoy. Let me plan my strategy without so many silly scripted events. The game is great but for me these sort of things detract from it. Do most people enjoy this aspect of the game or not?

Cheers,
Chris

I wasn't a fan of the Java land battle either. though I discovered that the trucks gravitate to the lower right hand corner of the map so I made the decision to complete the other objectives first and then go after the trucks.

If you playing head on attacking style the trucks will run away, if you play round up and supply cut you will catch those trucks in the encirclement

I thought the objectives were fairly easy and all I had left to do was chase around the map looking for trucks. Turned out the AI still had a lot of fight left and I got a bloody nose. In future I'll finish a scenario before I comment :)

I think your original sentiments are correct. The scenario design in general for the Japanese campaign has left me wanting more of an even handed and thoughtful scenario design. Since when could Japan lose the pacific war because they didn't destroy some trucks on an isolated, very doomed island? Dealing with silly objectives and heavily scripted scenarios has really killed the game for me. The massive amount of men and material available to the Allies in this scenario in particular just strains credibility beyond any limits and maximizes the gamey feel of the scenario. I think one of the most important rules in game design is that for every negative you hit a player with, you must also give them something positive. Otherwise (in this case in particular) the scenario designer just keeps hitting the player over the head.

Edit- I removed an unfair and inflammatory statement.

Yeah but remember that you're playing a reskinned Panzer General. Just accept the gamey-ness and have fun.

I have no problem with the formula, I very much enjoy Panzer Korps. Like I said, just wishing for a more thoughtful scenario design. Playing Panzer Korps, some of the scenarios are brutal. At the same time they just felt right. Its a very tricky needle to thread and I am sure the developers have the ability, the scenarios in the Philippine's were good (accept maybe the fortified batteries were overdone). They are good at creating kill zones and interesting choke points, but the scripting and objectives hinder more than help. Perhaps the scenarios get better, but to be honest my time is limited right now and I don't have infinite patience.

If I ever get a vacation, I might create a campaign of my own. I might mod the ship and plane stats too, there needs to be greater definition in naval warfare.

Edit- I know I am being a little hard on the developers, but I wouldn't even comment on a crappy game. It would just get uninstalled without comment. I do like the game overall.

Hmm I actually am quiet the opposite. I really disliked Panzer General and Panzer Corps "Conquer it all within X turns" on rinse and repeat. That is what REALLY annoyed me about that game. The new, unconventional mission objectives are what really made me love OOBP. I would have loved even some more, even more unusual objectives. Maybe even a dreaded escort mission, who knows!
