Multiplayer- unable to claim a game

I joined a muiltiplayer challenge. after a week the host hasn't made the first move so the claim selection is now available. each time I click on the claim button the small window with the spinning flag displays says it is connecting. That is as far as it gets.
At that point I have to exit the game because nothing else works.

any suggestions?
