<mod>.scn & ww2.map => <mod>.data

Post by rkr1958 »

I think I just figured some things about the editor and modifying scenario but I wanted to confirm those here.

1. I used the editor to create a <mod>.scn & modified ww2.map files.

2. I move those files into "C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe At War\data\scenario" (of course backing up any files before overwriting them.)

3. I then open the game, which while loading, creates the <mod>.data file.

4. I start a game playing the mod and save it as <mod>-saved.data, which the program saves in the appropriate folder.

5. From now on all map (e.g., new bases, changed terrain) and unit details about that game (except data in the "C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe At War\data\*.txt") is contained in that saved file (<mod>-saved.data). Is this correct?

6. So, if I make a new mod and change the ww2.map file or even the <mod>.scn and letting the program create a new <mod>.data file, the units, added bases, change terrain, etc. in the on-going saved game (<mod>-saved.data) are not affected by these mods. Is this correct?

7. Now here comes another part that I think I just figured out. If you try to open the game with a scenario (.scn) file and that scenario does not have a companion data (.data) file, and that scenario is not compatible with the current ww2.map file then CEaW will crash. In order to have CEaW create the companion .data file for a given .scn file you must have loaded the correct ww2.map file. Is this correct?

8. Bottom line. You can have as may scenario and map mods as you wish. Also, once a game is underway and has been save any changes to it's .scn & .data scenario files and ww2.map file will have not effect on that game. Is this correct?

9. I know that the scenario editor is a freebie and is provided as is, but it would be nice (if possible) to add a scenario mod "compile" feature that would create the companion .data file without having to have to do this by loading CEaW. Could such a feature be added to the editor?
