Is historian career good choice?

Post by best75 »

Sorry if this is not right place to post this but I did not know where else to post and this is the best place I could thought of.

I am 15 and later this year will have to make important choice of classes for next year. I need to figure out what my furture career will be. It has never been clear of what I want to be. I though of being historian but I am not sure if it could work.

Is there a demand for historians?

there will always be a demand for historians, but to what degree is another question, a career path and goals are one thing, but achieving them is another.

the job market is tough, and sometimes unless your very lucky you may have to take what you can get over what you want, as the bills need paying either way, for me it's not now days what you want that matters so much, but what's about in the job market, i coached swimming for over 20 years and saw many young adults your age and over thinking along the same lines, most went on to get degree's in subjects that never lead to a career in the given field but degree's can open some doors, while others close shut in your face.

teaching is always a good option and career choice, as they are always in demand, but like most paths it also depends on where you live and the demand that's needed, any profession that gives long term stability in to days world is a good move, have you any skills regarding programming or languages etc ?

computer programming or any IT is good to have, plus and of the worlds languages is also good to know, as then it will double up with you first choice as makes it a bit more special, normal subjects are fine and will always be in demand, where the fringe ones will be less in demand dependant on how many courses are run and the demand for them in the first place.

either way good luck and i wish you the best of luck and success in what ever path you chose...

I think a Historian is a tough job to get. Not many people who study it end up using it. One of my friends who studied history has been working for an estate agents magazine for some time.

I'm not saying don't do it, but be aware not many get to use it and there are other more general qualifications which might be more useful for your career.
