Entrained unit

Post by Erik2 »

This unit looks like it can move by train.
In reality, it can only move by foot or truck (or one hex by train).
Looks like train movement is blocked by the other units
Custom scenario testing hot-seat.

Hey Erik,

I'm no expert on OOB:P, but here is what I think based on long-time "Panzer Corps" experience: the selected infantry has the option to move by train because it is located in a city hex with a railway leading into it (=>station). As it would be very vulnerable to enemy attacks when moving by train, it would automatically choose to use its default (leg) movement if the target hex can be reached that way. I guess that's why many hexes are just highlighted "as normal" (without the train symbol).

The town to the upper right can still be reached without using the train, as the infantry would use less movement points because of the road connection, thus has increased "range". Behind that town, along the railway, there are the train symbols again.

Another question would be: what if you wanted to use truck movement instead? Does the game let you choose transportation type? Gotta check the Java/Batavia scenario...

Cheers

In this case the game may be getting a bit confused when there are two (rail) bridges next to each other.

I don't think you can choose wether to use truck or train. The game calculates relatedthe movement range you select.
The possibilities are of course dependent on the terrain your unit moves over, you may get:
Short range = foot
Medium range = truck
Max range = train

Then again, in this case the Japanese unit could have used truck to move 2 hexes, but the game evidently prefers the choo-choo.
Would be nice to be able to select means of transportation though...

Hopefully my last train post...
Here's what I think the original issue was, a combination of rail and river fork.
Stops the train cold in its tracks.

Well, the train driver was simply watchful - those tracks are flooded! :D

Hmm should have an option to choose transport like PzC makes us easier.

Yeah, being able to hop off the train virtually anywhere along the tracks and rail moving units "by accident" feels a little, well, clunky. The PzC approach was more intuitive, IMHO.

Debarking infantry units anywhere is OK by me. All other equipment type units need to debark in a town/city hex.
What I would really like to see is a less fuzzy transport outline. Currently it is hard (for me anyway) to determine the transport status in certain types of terrain.
This of course makes it easy to do mistakes.
