Recon units

Post by Erik2 »

They cannot grab an objective, I'm ok with that.
But I wish they could deny the enemy the objective by turning it into a neutral one (neutral flag).
Then the unit could have some real purpose running amuck behind enemy lines, and players would have to leave a couple of security units behind for garrisoning.

Having a quick (AI) unit run around your rear territory, taking back flags one by one is very annoying, and the main reason we introduced the 3 turn capture delay on flags. At least now it can be cut of from supply since the unit no longer gets a new supply source instantly by taking yet another flag. So allowing this behaviour for recon units - which don't require supply and is even harder to trace - would be even worse.

Indeed. It might sound fun to wreak havoc against the AI, but imagine the AI doing this to you, or someone choosing 5 jeeps in multiplayer. This is something we have personal experience of from the early game. A fast moving jeep that avoids all conflict, but scoots around damaging supply without ever running out of supply itself would be a horrible gameplay experience.

An idea could be to make land recon vehicles able to detect concealable units defending cities. To limit it a bit I'd not give this ability to air recon, and would excempt commando type units from being spotted that way by recon vehicles.

This could make land recon more useful, and players who want to overdo it for the reason to scan everything quickly would pay a price otherwise (having lots of recce vehicles means less points for land units with better combat value - so a trade off recce vs. "frontline" combat units).

Yes, something that would entice you to actually buy a recon unit would be nice.
I get the problems with making them too powerful.
