Early Tercio Fragmented

Post by KiwiWarlord »

Just started a new MP game of early 30YW Germans, I had a Large, average, Early Tercio of 2000 men fired upon, on M3, by 1 enemy Tercio, it Disrupted.
Next turn fired upon by 1 enemy Tercio and 1 Detachment of Shot and it Fragmented. Not sure of the total casualties but less than 100.
If I am reading the rules correctly this should not have happened ?

Do you mean because it wasn't 5% losses per test?

I cannot immediately recall the algorithm, but the % losses for cohesion test purposes are based on a maximum unit size for infantry of circa 850 men. Early tercios have 2000 men, so the "rear" half of the unit does not contribute towards resistance to the morale effect of enemy fire.

This is not specified in the manual (an oversight) but it is part of the simulation aspect of the game. The theory is that beyond a certain depth rear ranks do not further mitigate the morale effect of fire against the front ranks. Without this rule Early Tercios really would be invincible.

You were, however, unlucky to fail 2 consecutive morale tests with casualties only just sufficient to trigger tests.

Thank you for the prompt reply RBS. Yes very unlucky indeed as I am sure it will now be running to the rear after being charged by a detachment of shot...
