Any one manage to get a veterancy 5 submarine?

Post by Kalostaphor »

It's quite impossible right now to get the ace sub achievement; at least from my perspective.

Submarines are not good. Better off with another destroyer!

I do not think there are enough turns in the game to make one a 5 star sub, even if you support them and present the targets on a silver platter.

Shame, they should really consider buffing the submarines; I feel like DD's just do whatever they can but better.

Of course, subs have a stealth advantage if they remain submerged, although not perfect. US subs have some merit in scenarios like Midway and Philippine Sea in that they can deploy far forward, giving them a decent chance to get in among IJN carriers and do some damage. They can even be helpful in keeping the carriers spotted. I have done modest damage to two carriers in Midway and one sub repeatedly attacked a carrier in Philippine Sea while another got one hit for damage 2 before being depth charged by destroyers. Never came close to 5 stars experience though.

Yeah it's pretty much an ad hoc achievement. I guess they where just thrown in for the Steam crowd as selling point, and never really tested if they work or are attainable.

Achievement hunt at its worst.

Try this:

Achievement: Did something really and way more meaningful instead of trying to get a 5 star Submarine as Steam achievement.

Now start a thread what you could do. :D

I think a more relevant question might be if anyone has managed to get a veterancy 1 submarine, because no, no I haven't. And I have even tried using the thing as much as I could.

3 Stars here, the second one 2 Stars.

I used it Guadalcanal and elsewhere to sink battleships. I think XP also rise quickly if you cause damage to something that is costly, like a battleship. This is also why my dive bombers easily got up to 5 stars, imo.

The US navy lost 52 out of some 200+ submarines in WW2 so the chances were pretty slim of gaining much "veterancy" IRL, anyway. It was a risky way to go to war, for all combatants.

Can not be more waste full than playing the game itself. If it's fun it's fine doing it. Though I think good achievements should encourage people to do out of the box thinking, do funny or unusual things. Things they usually would not consider or step up the difficulty, as insta gratification only rewards for a short time.

The purple hearth or the ghost ships are funny achievements. Consolidation price. Panzer Corps would had some nice achievements if they actually worked as planed like Denied- Over-Strength, -Artillery, -Elite Replacements, too bad they didn't. But Lonely Wolf worked an was a very good one too. Still think Greatest American Honor is impossible to achieve consider the number of kills required but the limited number of scenarios available till the end. But I just checked. Steam tells me 0.1% have it. Darn

Totally agree with Dragoon on achievement makes us play a very different game.

I am doing Fleet Admiral difficulty atm on US campaign and doing hunting that elite sub achievement hehehe and I use my sub to go behind that carrier in north and sunk it lol was funny and hard. Need a lot of patient and a DD to lure their DD away before my sub can sneak in. Maybe harder difficulty help on this achievement as enemy start at strength 13 as I notice my sub is at 1.5 star already at coral and haven't finish coral yet. The sub will hunt those supply ships in coral hopefully can get 2 stars sub before midway hehehe

Reform a unit is when it got completely destroyed, and instead to buy a completely new unit you rebuild the destroyed unit one. With other words in this case. Have a ship sunk 5 times. Then there where it list your units (hotkey F), click on the tab with the coffin on it (last tab) to find your destroyed units and click to reform.

The game also ask you, when you try to buy a new unit, and you have a destroyed unit of the same class, if you want to reform this unit for a 5% discount instead.

In PzC a reformed unit would keep it heroes and medals, useful if Rudel got shot down again behind enemy lines. He got shot down a couple of times, but always made it back. Lucky SOB ;)

Lonely Wolf is only possible if you are playing one of the really early Allied scenarios which has lots of auxillaries. If there are more than 10 enemy units it can't be done and even with very few you cannot get a DV (I tried it on the 2nd Allied one and still only barely made it!)

And playing OOB is not a waste!

I did it during playing the grand campaign east, when playing it 3 times for the Rommel, Guderian, Manstein achievements. You don't have to get a DV. Minor victory is enought, but of course it's the cherry on the pie. :) As nice bonus you get the Under Strength Army achievement too. I must say the dev team did a really good job in picking and naming the achievements. Tip of the hat to them.

"I survived Stalingrad and all I got was this lousy achievement" is easily the best!
