Schnellboote

This naval unit seems pretty much useless to me. Is there any point to it? Anybody actually use it effectively??

Additional sub hunters for when your Destroyers miss or aren't numerous enough....also good for finishing off badly depleted units and for screening....stop opponents destroyers getting to your subs...stop his BB getting into range of your cruiser etc

Yeah; this unit doesn't really have great stats. It can't really deal much damage except against weakened units. The main thing that irks me about it though, is that it only carries TWO ammo... agh...

Yeh 2 ammo sucks.....though you're probably lucky if the plucky little guys survive to shoot more than twice!

They are excellent scouts, they are great at sinking Convoy ships, and they have 8 ammo.

But I'm talking about Hunters in the Atlantic. :)

Excellent (and sacrificable )scouts, and good also for antisub tasks, very useful in the Sea Lion operation!

In Sealion 40 I think I only shot once with with one of them....but it did sink the British Sub after my Destroyers and a TAc failed so think they did ok :)

There are some nice videos on youtube of this boat. Looks like it has a couple of torpedo tubes, and an AA cannon, which I believe is used for the sound effect in the game.

My understanding is that these boats, for their class (think PT Boat) were very well built and effective little ships. The flak gun on the bow , for example, was recessed into the hull which not doudt helped stability as well as providing cover/protection for the crew. Most games, whether WW2 or 4x sci fi :) never really get one to apreciate the value and importance of the many smaller work horse ships used by navies , but instead concentrate on the size of the guns and armour of the big boys. I think the German navy was more effectivly crippled from the loss of 8 or so destroyers in the Norway campaign than the loss of any of their 4 capitol ships.

Hello, everyone who might somehow come across this great game like I did, by accident. I'm going from the beginning threads up to the current ones, as I play the game. I thought this particular thread was worthy of resurrection. It took a few times reloading for me to realize what these little guys are meant to do. They kick ass on subs! They are great little screeners. The AI seems to really despise them. Fun stuff.

This is such a great update to one of my all-time favorite games. This is the best yet. So as I go through the threads, I'll bring back the ones I find useful as I go through the game. I've found the Battle History Screen, (the manual doesn't tell how to access it), and how to rename units (Ctrl N). Victory or death! Hoorah!

Welcome Don. I think you'll find that most of us on here regard PC as one of our favorite games as well.

Regarding the S-boats, I generally do use them as cannon fodder. I'd rather have some British cruiser attacking them than some capital ship. I try to position the S-boats between my transports & the anticipated direction of the enemy fleet.

There's a few scenarios where they come with extra ammo so they stay useful a bit longer, but otherwise they are mainly useful to draw fire away from other ships. On the positive side, the spotting works just as well whether they have ammo or not.

Most of them in scenarios seem to start with 6-8 ammo, but have a max of 2. Their fuel is relatively low too, though that usually doesn't matter. In my A&A campaign I've accidentally left a few adrift in the ocean.

Otherwise, I've found them roughly as good as Destroyers in most games -- slightly worse but not enough to really matter. If it's a longer game though, or if they only start with 2 ammo, then they're pretty bad.

You don't use them to kill the sub in Norway? I don't have enough destroyers left to kill the sub when it arrives. The destroyers draw a lot of attention, or maybe I'm using them as screeners correctly. I hope my light cruiser survives long enough to draw fire away from my land troops, esp my arty. I'm getting pretty good at DVs in Norway.

The little S-boats do a better job on the sub than destroyers. And then they do attract the attention of the enemy navy and effectively screen my disadvantaged navy.

Oh, this is on LT level. Colonel level kicks my ass so far a couple more scenarios after.

:)
