So, we have nobody with 3D Studio experience here?

Post by rezaf »

I found a years old version (9, iirc) on a no-longer-used PC at work, but 3D software is obviously written by some alien race whose brain operates on wholly foreign assumptions.
I stare at the screen, and all I can make out is "The river Temarc - in winter.". And I don't understand what it means.

Since not a single new unit has been released yet, I assume there's nobody around that understands these weird aliens?

Would Blender work? I think it can save 3DS Max format.

3d formats is one problem, unfortunately it's way more difficult here than in the 2d world.

Also OOB uses a full blown real time 3d engine, so you need low-polygon models with specific UV texture maps. Most free models you find on the web are not recommended here (aside the fact that they'll often not work due to different formats etc.) as they are way too detailed (eating up too much resources).

UV maps are made to "wrap" exactly around a specific model's geometry (imagine your 3d unit as some paper model with the texture map being the paper "unwrapped" into a pic you can edit).

Both modelling and then UV mapping is not something you learn in a very short time, esp. if you need time to learn to handle 3d software on top. It's certainly doable, and there are tutorials for a lot of things out there, but needs quite some time and patience.

I've seen modders doing custom 3d models for quite a number of games using 3d engines, like Civ4, the TotalWar and Silent Hunter series etc. (some were just re-textured, but many are really done from scratch), but it's certainly not something mastered in a couple of hours.

Oh, and yay to Darmok and Jalad references :)

That goes without saying I guess.

I did some minor meddling with 3D models for PzC - mostly just loading them into various tools and arranging them so I could take screenshots for PzC icons.
So, I gotta say, either you guys do the heavy lifting yourselves at some point and release PROPER modding tools or you just hope an enterprising fan will create them at some point in time.
And by "modding tools", I'm thinking of a piece of software that can import a 3D model from a selection of formats (at the very least one, obviously) in a somewhat smart fashion, detect possible problems (too many polygons etc.) and display the model as it'll look in the game.
Expecting players to learn professional 3D software (let alone 3D Studio Max, which is very expensive on top) drastically limits the modding prospects of the game.
Just remember your old 3D model tutorial in the Panzer Corps forum and the flood of models created by a horde of new modelers it inspired...

Since the Panzer Corps stock models are possibly still lying around on some HD, you could also just touch them up and sell them for a tenner or something.
We'd immediately have the european theatre all but covered.
