Lens 1648

Post by nikdav »

20 august 1648:
Five years after Rocroi the Spanish and the French Army meet again and this time the 18000 strong Spanish-Imperial army was ready for revenge.....

I am working on the final adjustment for the order of battle

Yes, this looks fine; looking forward to the scenario too!

Nikdav, am I correct that you have placed the commanders' names on the map? Is this done just for the preview or will it be a part of the finished scenario?

Yes they are on the map,i think it is a very flexible and rapid manner to make a basic order of battle, and i leave it on the finished scenarios. At first i think is annoying to see the names on the map but after many test now i like the feeling of the battlefield.

Ok, I'm a bit sceptic, but I'll give it a try. :)

(In a way this thread brings me back to a matter I always notice while playing: I really miss leaders in the game.)

Those leader names are cool. Now if they can float above the units instead of being stuck on the map. Putting leader names on the unit description is an option but it just adds more entries in the various text files.

I find that in the linear battles are perfect for a more historical feeling and during the test the position of leaders help me to balance the unity strength.

I"m curious to know why Spanish infantry is depicted as colunela.

In the first line we had two average Walloon tercios (Bruay/Crevecoeur + Lamottiere/Grossbandon) a good german Tercios (Beck/Monroy) and
two very solid old Spanish tercios (Toledo + Bentivoglio/Guasco).
In second line 3 good Spanish tercios (Solis + Vargas + Boniface) and a big german tercio (Berlau/Arias).
All the lorrainer regiment were only musketeer and Raimondo Montecuccoli in his memories noted that the battle was lost for the lack of pikes of the lorrrainer infantry.
After some test i find the 700 men Colunela as the best solution for the Spanish tercios but every suggestion is welcomed !

that caught my eyes because the colunela is a historical formation that was phased out in favour of the tercios in the 1530s. In practical terms the main difference is the disappearance of the sword and buckler men. Using the colunela stock unit also means you have units with a firing range of 4 (17th century pike and shot) and others 2 (the colunela).

Stock units:
colunela: 50% arquebuses (range 2), 34% pikes, 16% swordmen
later tercio: 60% muskets (range 4), 40% pikes

there's nothing wrong with using arquebuses if you want to reduce the firing range and pretend they're muskets, but having two groups of infantry with different ranges while presumably using the same weapons is odd.

it is more realistic to edit the stock units (by adding entries to the squad files) to get the desired effect.
