Should we start a "shooty cav are overpowered" thread?
It is nice to see a mix of armies winning comps. That indicates two things to me: 1) that there is not a category of overpowered armies, and 2) that player skill (and/or luck) matters more than army choice. Of course, it is early days for FoG, and we could still identify some killer army lists. But it looks increasingly likely that the play balance in FoG is very good indeed.

It's a bit unfortunate that the first three NZ comps (all open) were won by shooty cav armies but I wouldn't want to overplay it at this stage. Steve is a very good player & may well have won anyway even if he had used his Seleucids. All of the Steppe armies were fortunate in not running into the bow-heavy foot armies (luck of the draw), and Rich's performance with Gallic has to be heartening.babyshark wrote:Should we start a "shooty cav are overpowered" thread?

There were 4 or 5 of us who have played 30+ games of FoG but most were still very new (anywhere from 1 to 10 games only) - the great outcome was the general enthusiasm and the sharing of knowledge with the more experiencede FoGGers. NZ's wargaming community is relatively small & dispersed so comps like this are good for spreading the word and getting everyone on board.

They're doing well in GB at present as wellTirithon wrote:

However, I recall at one time during beta testing they were doing well and people worried that they may be too powerful, but then opponents started working them out and their success rate fell away.
I lost big to Ian Speed's Skythians last weekend when using Pontic, however, half way through the game I had half his army pinned against the rear table edge and if their shooting hadn't come off and my resulting CTs gone against me it is probable that he would have lost them (even if at only 1AP each by evading off) and I'd have won big from there.

This tournament was alot of fun even for guys like me who only had 2-3 FOG games under their belt before the tournament proper. While my HYW English did finish dead last *sigh* the overall experience was really good and we found that everyone was able to contribute something to the days events. The robust discussion about FOG, its rules, interpretations and how best to play particular armies were particularly good and really helped - having only previously played Warhammer Fantasy I found that even after 2 extra games that the rules were getting easier to follow.
Would like to offer my thanks to all the guys from the Wellington Warlords who made it such a great day.
A lot of us took photos on the day here are some of mine, of my own army - HYW Continental English - and the 4 games I played. All of my figures are from Essex Miniatures.
Game 1 vs. Late Republician Roman (LOSS)

Game 2 vs. Carthaginian (WIN)

Game 3 vs. Late Medieval German (DRAW)

Game 4 vs. Yorkist English (LOSS)
