Later Carthaginians first attempt, comments please

Post by Millsy »

Hi All,

Finally got my army books in the post today but still waiting on the rules. Couldn't help myself though so I had a stab at a list. :)

Any advice, comments, suggestions on the following would be appreciated. I'm trying to get a solid block of Core troops to begin with and then expand with "flavour" afterwards. This is 801 points I believe. Our group doesn't care about the odd extra.

*** Commanders ***
1 x C-in-C - Inspired Commander
1 x Field Commander
1 x Troop Commander

*** Core Troops ***
4 x Spanish Cavalry - Armoured, Superior, Undrilled
4 x Spanish Cavalry - Protected, Superior, Undrilled
4 x Spanish Cavalry - Protected, Superior, Undrilled
6 x Numidian Light Cavalry - Light Horse, Unprotected, Average, Undrilled
6 x Numidian Light Cavalry - Light Horse, Unprotected, Average, Undrilled
6 x African Spearmen - Heavy Foot, Protected, Average, Drillled
6 x African Spearmen - Heavy Foot, Protected, Average, Drillled
8 x Numidian Javelinmen - Light Foot, Unprotected, Average, Undrilled
8 x Libyan Javelinmen - Light Foot, Unprotected, Average, Undrilled
6 x Spanish Mercenary Scutarii - Medium Foot, Protected, Average, Undrilled
6 x Spanish Mercenary Scutarii - Medium Foot, Protected, Average, Undrilled
6 x Balearic Slingers - Light Foot, Unprotected, Superior, Undrilled

*** Optional Troops ***
4 x Libyphonecian Cavalry - Armoured, Superior, Drilled
2 x Elephants - Average, Undrilled

How does it look? Balanced?

I played one of the authors. He had 2 bgs of 12 HF Impact foot swordsmen. He put the IC with these and this blunted my attack buying him just enough time to beat me elsewhere.

You might consider shifting the 2 BGs of 6 LH each into 3 BGs of 4 LH each. 4 base BGs evade much better than 6 base BGs, and you get another BG for attrition point purposes. On the other hand, if you plan to use the LH to attack enemy skirmishers, as opposed to skimishing yourself, perhaps the 6 base BGs are better.

How's that for contradictory advice?

I think for the point-count/army size you are light on heavy foot and heavy on light troops and cavalry. I think adding the elephants if suitably protected and some gauls would make for a better balance?

Thanks for the responses guys. Having not played a game as yet I made the list based on what seems a "solid core" of stuff. I have no idea (other than what I have read here) of the relative merits of unit types and sizes vs. roles assigned to them.

Martin: I was thinking last night about dropping the 4 x Libyphonecian Cavalry and replacing with some Gallic Foot. I'll give that even more consideration now.

Marc: The units of 6 LH were chosen thinking light troops would need to be a bit bigger to survive. I'll still go with 12 bases anyway and then I can switch between 4s and 6s as I work out what works best for me.

Ray: Given what WhiteKnight also said about heavy foot I think I definitely need more in that case. Sounds like a big bunch of Gallic Foot are required!

Thanks again guys. Much appreciated! :D
