A missing Carrier

Post by apec »

Do you know how many US carriers are in the Midway scenario (Japan Campaign)? I sunk three US carriers and the mission status says that the "sunk all carriers" secondary objective is not acomplished yet. I wonder if the remaining carrier(s) has (have) left the field.

I had a similar problem with a secondary objective in Coral Sea to destroy all fighters. The game even stated I did so, but the secondary objective didn't count as completed.

IRL they had 3 carriers there; if you sunk 3 that should be about it.

er they had 6 at midway...

4 main carriers and 2 lighter ones.

I think for the scenario however you need to get the 4.

I don't think the game generates light carriers for this mission. So the number is four (went a bit derpy since I'm not an avid pacific theatre history guy).

I took out the 2 carriers that were going to be in midway in the mission before it, so I don't know how it affects that map.

That was not enough, I won the scenario but failed to achieve the "sunk all carriers" secondary objective.
To check if I failed to spot the last carrier hiding somewhere in the map, I re-loaded the last turn save and removed the FOW, indeed no US carrier was present on the map so I think she left before I could spot it.

If you capture the island, the enemy fleet will start to withdraw, so it's possible a carrier escaped.

Myrddraal thank you for the clarification.

Right, what happened was that I opted for a quick invasion and concentrated part of my fleet in support of the Landing force. Next time I will be more patient :D

Just to clarify, the carriers go into withdraw mode whether or not you captured Midway, at about 10 turns to go. Might also be related to the number of losses you inflicted.
I had to rely on my airforce exclusively to catch the last two, which had stayed further to the northeast compared to the other pair. But then I proceeded to sink everything they had - got the last two destroyers already parked on the withdrawal hex.
This was the only point in my Japan campaign so far that I got planes in the air on their last turn of fuel...

OP asked how many US carriers there were - not how many Japanese carriers were at Midway. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I have not played as Japanese yet, but I can tell you that as a level-2 US player, you get three carriers, to which I added my own core carrier. Oddly enough, one of the three US carriers you start with, have no aircraft so you have to buy core aircraft to outfit it.
I suspect that now that I have re-started a new campaign as a level-3 US player, I will only start Midway with 2 carriers, plus any core carriers I may bring or buy. But perhaps I'm wrong about this...

Those extra core aircraft come in real handy once you start the Guadalcanal scenario (hint, hint.) :)

I understand that there is no variation in the number of auxiliary units at higher difficulty levels, but now you should find 10 strenght ememy units vs the 8 strenght units you faced at level-2. Of course I may be wrong since I am still at level-2 while learning the game...

Funnily enough, I've encountered the same issue. the US carriers didn't withdraw though, quite the opposite. They repeatedly moved up to attack some destroyers I threw in to lure them out :-) Cleared the map of US vessels by turn 20 or something, after which I put units over the entire map in vain to find what was keeping the victory condition from triggering. Not sure if it's relevant, but I didn't destroy the airfield within 5 turns.

level 3 = 10 strength enemy; level 4 = 12; I think level 5 is at 13...
