Detecting enemy spawn points

It is 1965 and the US ground war in Vietnam is in full swing. As a US Army commander, wage a counter-insurgency (COIN) war to secure the Ia Drang valley, on the border with Cambodia.

Detecting enemy spawn points

Post by rf900 »

I know about the 10 points of the trail been randomly generated and the mechanic of the creation of enemy units.

But I would like to know what are some good ways to detect those spawn points while playing. Also not sure if this is an exploit or a strategy that can be used.

I have not been very lucky detecting these points, it will require setting ambushes and having a detailed account of the approximate position of all enemy units. A couple of questions that may help me:
  • Do enemy units move the same turn they spawn?
  • Do they move with the same costs as player infantry?
  • When the enemy unit retreats after combat where does it go, can it be anywhere on the map? Is it the same when they successfully do a RPG attack for example?

The best way is to look on the Intel map and switch on the VC contacts, you will see a pattern emerge which will indicate where the trail points are. :)

Enemy spawn and move at the same turn and move with slightly better movement than players troops, but not not dramatic.

When NVA win a battle they retreat to the west and continue with their original mission, when VC win a battle they disband , so the VC always disband after combat regardless of result as they are a militia and have no cohesion, the NVA are a regular army and regroup and continue.

The animation of the VC running across the map after a combat is misleading and we have fixed this in the update. :)

Wait until you drop a base on/next to a spawn point. You see them running all round and it becomes the mother load for PP.

I can see where trying to locate and eliminate a spawn point would be a fun (and realistic) part of the game. Im glad to see that NVA and VC are modelled differently.

The asymmetric nature of the war, and indeed most COIN wars, is fundamental, guerilla and conventional warfare.
