Naval Units Disappeared

Had a combined fleet and army, conducted an attack on a Provence w/o a port, army moved ashore and the naval units disappeared.

Haven't been able to reproduce this.
Is it possible that your naval units got left behind and are still at sea? (This is the behavior I observe.)
