Can't run 162 patch install

Post by Jimbonsx »

I've tried to install the 162 upgrade to my Windows 7 laptop - using the 'Check for updates' facility the program terminates with 'abnormal termination error' message. Downloaded the patch direct, unzipped, tried to run, get an message box 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path,or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.' - path in question is C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Local\Temp\_ir_sf_temp_0\irsetup.exe. I do have the permissions, and this is not the first time I've had this problem with a Slitherine game. What do you suggest?

I have come across this problem before, the AppData problem can be related too, registery cleaning software such as "CCleaner" To solve this problem, I had to do a system restore to an earlier time when my PC worked without a hitch.

You can also download the patch directly, reboot your Windows in safe mode, install the patch and then reboot Windows normally.

To start Windows in safe mode follow this guide:

Thanks for the word on the Windows Safe mode bit, the patch installed (I think - got an error with the C++ bit). Anyway, back to normal Windows, tried to run it, got the same error message = 'Cannot access the specified path....' etc - bit weird, I was in Windows Explorer and trying to execute the executable directly in the folder. Getting worried now....

....anyway, found the cause of the error message during the C++ install in Safe Mode - it was "couldn't find the Installer service" which was understandable in Safe Mode I suppose. Don't think it mattered as I already had what was needed there from the reinstalled CTGW130. I can run the game in Safe Mode (albeit 640x480 which is a joke) but as soon as I return to Normal Mode it don't wanna know. Beyond weird, beyond worried, getting cheesed off.

Disable your Internet security programs while attempting to run the game.
If this fails uninstall the game and reinstall in a folder different than C:\Program Files (x86)\.... try it in for example, C:\Games\....

A bit worried about this one - is it just for the duration of the startup or for the whole game-play time?

We need to test if any of your Internet security programs aren't interfering with the game, so you need to completely disable them.
If you are afraid that something might happen with your system while you do this test, just unplug the network cable or the wireless device you use to connect to the Internet during the test.
You can also start with the last suggestion... Your issue is typically related with security settings or/and administrator permissions.

I turned off my wireless access to the Internet and the game started perfectly. Closed the game, restarted wireless access, same error message. I'm using Avast AV if that helps.

Then the issue is related with your anti-virus/firewall. Try creating an exclusion area for the game installation folder within your anti-virus and firewall.

Alternately, you can also try the following:
Open the game installation folder and locate a file named ctgw.exe. Run the file and check if you are able to run the game this way.

Found it - I needed to set up some exclusions from the AV software. Thanks guys.
