Unit portraits for the Italian wars

Post by Philippeatbay »

So far I've only glanced at the Italian wars, but what jumped out at me after a quick look was the round image of a musketeer.

The problem with the musketeer/arquebusier is that he is wearing 17th century garb, which looks great in the TYW and ECW, but out of place in the Italian Wars.

I haven't tracked down where these images are located yet, so I can't tell if something is missing in the graphics, the code, or both.

The disparity is even more obvious when looking at (for example) Ottoman Janissaries. Unfortunately the graphics budget and time constraints did not allow us to have individual images for each of the 160+ unit types. The images are therefore only indicative of the functional troop-type, not the appearance of the specific unit.

Of course if anyone wanted to make a mod adding additional images, they could easily do so. The image file references are in the IconID column of the squads file. The images are located in the main installation in /PikeandShot/Data/UI/Textures/Icons. Additional ones can be added in the equivalent folder in custom campaigns, which can also have custom versions of the Squads file.

If anyone is capable of painting images matching the style and quality of the ones in the game, and keen enough to do so, we could even incorporate them in a future update. Note that it would not be necessary to create a full set, it is easy to replace any individual unit type's icon if a better one comes to hand.

Prime targets for a makeover would be 16th century Pikemen, 16th century arquebusiers, Ottoman Janissaries.....

There's a lot of repetition. Someone can mod them given the time. Replacing pictures is easy. But with several factions using the same unit entry is squads.csv, you cannot be very specific with country and time frame And must be aware of the extent of units being reused.
