Vikings and Memorial Day

Post by Ninthplain »

Hello all,

For Memorial Day weekend I plan to dust off my favorite army, Vikings, and let them hack at some poor heathens. I am posting the list here to see what folks think since it is an attempt to convert from another game list.

I tried to keep it generic since I am not sure what is usable at differant times, for example Leidang lists allowed knights.

I think you need about 15 TC! The way you roll, you'll need as many rerolls as possible! :P

Quality re-rolls are one of the best things in this game. :-)

I think the Huscarls/Hird may be better modeled as Impact Foot/Swordsmen rather than as HW. While the use of the two handed ax seems to have been fairly common for them, it probably was not universal and if you read the various Icelandic Saga it seems clear that the sword was the weapon accorded the highest status.

I suspect that the normal Bondi should either be Light Spear/Swordsmen or alternatively Defensive Spearmen. (The latter seems to be the standard rating for post Classical spearmen.) I would probably prefer the former classification as closer to the historical evidence but either is plausible. Bondi archers should probalby be either LF or else MF deployed as part of a normal Bondi unit rather than as a separate body of non skirmishing archers.

Viking cavalry might be better rated as poor rather than as average at least for the classical Viking era (before 1066 or ther abouts). Up to that time they are far more likely to represent individuals who may well be experienced horsemen but who are not trained to fight mounted in formation.
