Re: Pike & Shot Caracole II
I think I may be finally emerging from newbie status:
Shawkhan2's Catholic League 1619-1632 26% won fighting those aberrant German Protestants 1618-1631 54% of Iandavidsmith.
An exciting battle.
Lots of rough terrain gave me some protection from Protestant cavalry as I was outnumbered there.
Exactly 2 tiles of woods for my tercios to hide in and behind.
I have found out the hard way that when infantry armies fight cavalry it is good to have lots of artillery.
When the Protestants could endure my cannon fire no longer they rushed my position.
I did not fare very well in the cavalry clash as expected but my tercios were able to get into melee quickly, and my favorite unit, the "Deathstar" did its job.

Tiopepe (Spanish) 49% won Ulysisgrunt (Swedish) 67%
Difficult battle for spanish that had to hold the salvo swedish firepower while was trying to stop enemy calvalry flanking my left wing. For one momment i thought ill loose the battle, but another time, my veteran spanish Tercios save the day.

I am still awaiting a Pod3 challenge proposal from Ulysisgrunt. (Apologies if it has been posted and I missed it)
The other two remaining games are in progress (albeit slowly).

Re: Pike & Shot Caracole II -- Phase 1 Final Stretch
All,
I've just finished surviving a visit from my grand children -- and plan to get caught up on my remaining games.
At this point, most players should only have four or fewer games left. Those of you who have more than that are either dawdling or facing dawdling players. I ask that everyone try and wrap up all your games by the end of March. So far, there haven't been requests to play against reserve players, so no such games are going.
I want to be able to slot people into competitive pods for Phase 2 -- and can really only do this fairly if everyone has played all their games.
Having said that, I am working on an alternative scoring system to slot people into pods based upon their number of victories, plus winning percentage. I will post that on the pod assignment thread.
Finally, if there are players who do not wish to enter into Phase 2 play, please communicate that to me.
Best regards,
John

Pod 3 result.
rbodleyscott (Scots Covenanters 1648-1652) (4%) won vs iandavidsmith (New Model Army 1646-1660) (42%)
Thanks Ian for another enjoyable game. As Stalin (may or may not have) said, quantity has a quality all of its own.

Re: Pike & Shot Caracole II
Pod 2: Rumguff's Bohemians (41%) win vs Moncholee's Catholics (68%).
A tricky battlefield was presented with a large wood and small lake in the middle of the field. To the north of that (bohemian side) was another smaller line of trees running obliquely along the field.
Initial deployments saw the Catholics advance past the main obstruction on both flanks following which both sides pivoted 90 degrees from initial lines about the smaller wood to the north with the Catholics and Bohemian infantry separated by the trees and with cavalry massing around each edge of the wood. The south end saw a protracted and slow cavalry battle slowed by the trees while infantry engaged round the north edge. Bohemian advantage in numbers told before long, with the Catholics loosing tercios here and there while the bohemians lost arkebusiers. It continued in that vein, with the larger numbers of lost troops on the Catholic side eventually taking its toll.
A very odd battle!

Another pod 1 result:
Hutze's French 1643-48 (15%) won vs susji's Spanish 1635-48 (40%)
The battle played out in a similar way like my first battle against flatsix. The Spanish positioned themselfes on a solitary central hill in strong formations. The Spanish horse deployed on their right flank. Again I surrounded the enemy position. The French horse swept away their Spanish counterparts, this time protected by a smallish detachment of French foot. The main French body enfolded the Spanish left and started to exchange fire. The French center was only covered by two musketeer units. After the cavalry clash was won, the French wheeled into the Spanish rear. Wedged between strong fire from the front and horse in their backs, the Spanish gave up.
Thanks susji for the game.

Re: Pike & Shot Caracole II
Pod 3 result:
rbodleyscott (Ottoman Turks 1618-1629) (0%) won vs Ulysisgrunt (Catholic League 1619-1632) (43%)
A combination of long distance artillery fire, skirmishing, and massed Janissaries shooting from a wood. (Clearly the Ottomans have learned from their sometime clients the Transylvanians). The Ottoman cavalry wings swept in to deliver the coup de grace, but the Catholic League forces did not stand against them.
