Well I went ahead and took the plunge for the base game and the Rise of Rome pack. Thank you all who helped answer my questions in the other thread.
Just starting to check it out and I really like the simple mechanics of the game so far. Simple but deep. I very much like that.
I have loaded the Unity Beta to check it out and while I like the changes to the UI I have to say in all honesty and I am not trying to be complainer but I find is hard to believe they went to all the trouble of porting it over to Unity and left the unit graphics the same.
I mean I get the reason for going to Unity, allowing the game to grow for the future but the unit graphics are so minimal and really low res why wouldnt that at least be updated to something more aesthetically pleasing?
I am a wargamer so I understand graphics are NOT what is the most important but a little update to the unit graphics, even if just something similar to Pike and Shot would certainly go a long way to making the game look updated and fresh.
I have no doubt I will find a very deep and enjoyable game here but I cannot help but think this has been a real missed opportunity.
Hopefully with the coming of the Unity version this opens up modding? Maybe the community can do what hasnt been done by the developer.
I mean no offense here just an observation from a new customer and this does not reflect on the gameplay in anyway, which I am sure will be wonderful.

i don't mind the graphics. i'm more concerned about this

i got the game when it came out in, what, 2010?, and i'm still playing it almost everyday. best money i ever spent. simple and immersive experience. pike and shot is just tedious to play in comparison (and don't get me started on the editor...) and a lot of times i don't know how i lost or won, especially the games where two armies lined up and shot at each other the entire time.

YA that is a very interesting thread there. Seems to have gotten a little negative as well which is not good to see coming from the dev but things happen and tempers flair.
I will have to do an comparison myself.
And dont get me wrong I dont care about the simple unit graphics just seems like it would have been a good time to update them a little to make them look a little nicer as the current unit graphics were obviously made quite some time ago.
Like I said maybe this is something that can be modded with the new Unity version.
I have purchased the base game and Rise of Rome plus have since added two other addons so I do like the game and want to invest time in it so I am not just here complaining to be complaining.
It is my view that a unit graphic update would sure serve this game well.

My graphics are grainy, but I don't care, the menu is improved and a lot of things seem improved... also, maybe I am wrong here, but it seems the 1000 point cap on multiplayer is gone now.

Re: New Buyer First Impression
From memory it was the cost of taking all those figurine images was the reason why new graphics were not done. Someone suggested a fan based image capture program, which is nice idea.
