15 mm Ancient British

Post by Oige1be »

I'm painting some 15mm Corvus Belli Ancient British for the moment, thanks to Madaxemans website, who recommends them as a 8,5/10. The figure are really great but the range isn't that big so I want to find an other manufacturer to mix the Miniatures up.

1) I guess there Gauls Army box are much the same figures right?
2) Anyone know a manufacturer who mixes really well with Corvus Belli?

Thanks

Figures

Post by Ninthplain »

I have the Gauls and ancient british boxes and the figures are the same.

I added Old Glory to mine for the Cav and Gesetii and they look fine. I realize that they are probably 15mm or 18mm but from a table top range you don't notice unless you put the figures on the same base.

I have not seen either Old Glory or Corvus Belli figures 'in the flesh.' Which are 15mm, and which are 18mm?

Many thanks,

In general I would not care about the miniatures being 15 or 18 mm. Corvus Belli are told to be big 15mm and Xyston 18 mm whereas Essex is little 15mm and Old Glory true 15mm. Whenever I am told that some miniatures are bigger than others I answer: and men, are not they far different one from another? If you are not covinced, take a look in the most famous Gauls ever known, Asterix and Obelix... Here you have a mix of Essex, Corvus and Old Glory Gauls:

You have 3 manufacturers and it seems to me that it is more a matter of quality to notice the procedence of the miniatures than the size. Just an opinon on that subject.

What I think you should take into account is that Corvus and Xyston have a better quality than Essex and Old Glory . The main problem I have found has concerned the cavalry scale, some manufacturers representing the little horses that existed in Ancient times and other manufacturers using actual horses (which are bigger) as a model. Ah, and shields may be another problem if you try to mix some miniatures who have a standard equipment such as Romans or Macedonians.

If you want more variety, consider also the posibility of converting the miniatures, moving the heads of arms. It is easy and provides you a bigger range of minis.

Thanks for the picture Strategos, Looks like I've been worrying for nothing. I'll be ordering some OG and Essex.

Thanks all.

My personal opinion of Essex Gauls/Britons is that the foot warriors are not their best figures, the shields are too large and the warriors hide behind them in rather defensive poses. On the other hand, the Essex slingers IMO are very good, with two animated poses. I quite like their light horse too, although some think the horses are too large (they might give you the smaller chariot ponies instead if you ask them nicely).

MagisterMilitum (Formerly Chariot) slingers in my experience tend to lose their sling hand because it is in a vulnerable position for getting knocked or bent and the wrist is slender. They have quite a large mix of Celtic warrior poses and equipment IIRC and their light horse are good if you don't mind the very slender javelins (probably accurate scale thickness, but a bit flimsy).

Actually I quite like the Minifigs foot warriors. Although the hair is a bit stylised, the poses look very aggressive.
Donnington also offer a variety of Celtic warriors which I rather like.
