Potential Buyer Question

Post by Stardog765 »

Hello all,
I am interested about maybe getting into this game.
Bought Pike and Shot and really enjoy it so this game also popped on my radar.

Will the new version, that I guess is going to Unity engine contain everything I own for the current version(old) of FoG?
Are there any screenshots of what the new Unity version looks like yet? Seems strange that its not being showed off some on here.
I know the graphics are absolutely secondary to the game play but I would be interested in seeing a few before making the purchase if possible.

Last question is from what I can tell the AI is some what challenged in the original FoG. Does the new game in Unity have improved AI for singleplayer?

Thank you for your help with my questions all.

Sorry thought of another quick question while browsing around the game pages.
It looks like there will be a new expansion called Wolves From The Sea coming out?

That is a time period I am very interested in so I will no doubt want that.
Any idea when that is coming and will any expansions I buy in the current FoG be pushed over to the new Unity version without extra cost?

Thank you again and sorry to be a bother.

Hi Stardog,

I'm not sure why it's been so quiet here and no-one has responded to you, that is unusual. I could have replied myself when I first saw your post and am sorry now that i didn't, but I had imagined a horde of more knowledgable people answering your questions for you. As I say, I'm not sure why that hasn't happened, but maybe you've just hit an unusually quiet spot. It's a pity because I have found this community to be a very friendly and very welcoming one, and so this silence is very unusual.

In an attmept to answer your questions:

It is my understanding that the new version of FoG will be free to anyone who already owns the game, as an upgrade, so there will be no extra charge. The army lists will be similarly free to those who already own them. If you use your existing serial numbers for the game and the army lists they will work on the new versions, as they did with the old.

I have heard rumours that Wolves from the Sea, and perhaps other new lists, might be coming out shortly after the new version of the game is published, but I can't say with any confidence whether this is true or not. Many of us are hoping so, though.

I hope you enjoy the game and get a speedier response in future, and apolgies once more.

Best Wishes

Mike

Hi Stardog!

I didn't respond because these were questions which I did not hold the answers too with any degree of appropriate clarity.

I confirm what Mike knows that the upgrade is free, and I can confirm its a lot smoother code/programming.

The AI is redone, but I cannot testify to how good it is.

The new army lists, I also have developed a defense mechanism to help me cope with waiting for Wolves of the Sea which I am dying to have since I am such a fan of the era, are done, which means that I believe the devs are only waiting for the new version... which might have been out already if it wasn't for a massively dying server network in January or something of the sort.

There are no screenies, but there is a public beta you can try. Cheers!

As for amount of opponents and strong community you won't regret joining! There is no shortage of games and good conversation around them... I am running 30 (the limit) mp games simultaneously all the time without a problem.

Asterix thank you for the info.
I appreciate it.

Does that demo only work if you own the current FoG?

Would be nice if there was a demo, as short as it might be that would give someone thinking about investing in this game a little taste of what the new engine will be like.

Thanks again for your help.

Well the problem with a demo is that although the AI is very decent, there is nothing like multiplayer in FoG... also this is more of a complex-rule computerized tabletop, which means that the publishing style here is very copyright-focused. You are buying into a substantial and pleasant club with FoG, and your money goes to support further development of what is a massive genre.... Renaissance and Napoleonic for instance could be on the horizon soon, as they exist in solid rule versions.

And yes, you need a serial to try the FoG (u) ... forgot that.

What I can tell you is, that the graphics are really pleasant, really practical, and although I have a very powerful PC that runs graphically superior games, FoG still gets the best of my attention span :D

Thank you Asterix,
I will give it some thought. I know its only $20 to get my foot in the door, but thats $20 haha

I do have to say it seems a little weird that there are no screenshots anywhere of the new version in action. I would think they would want to promote the new Unity version.

I appreciate the feedback here, thank you

Hi Stardog. The original game is still worth the purchase. If you are into tabletop wargaming, then this is still one of the best games out there. When the new version comes out, that is a bonus! Good community of players to help you learn the game as well!

Cheers, Claymore
