Swords and Scimitars?
OK...for the 2nd month on the trot I have received an e-mail from Amazon stating that there is a month delay on this title!!!
Having sent them a snotty mail re. their continued ineptitude they have told me that it the supplier..ie Slitherine/Osprey that is to blame..could someone from the team enlighten me as to who is to blame for the delay?
Those of you not in the UK needn't reply with tales of how good their copies are as I am only interested in the UK market...I can only hope that someone tells the truth and sorts this prob out asap...I realise that it isn't a matter of life and death but we all get quite excited at the next installment and it just seems weird that just as the release date comes into view the delay suddenly becomes apparent...how can this come as a last minute surprise for any of the suppliers/distributors...only honest answers please!!??

At the Recon convention in Orlando at the end of April, I sold every copy ofv the rules, Immortal Fire, Storm of Arrows and Rise of Rome that I had at the booth including my own copies.
My distributor called me today and said that new shipments of many of the FoG books were beign shipped to me Thursday, so I would have them for the Nashville show next weekend.
I also contacted osprey to see what they had at the Pa warehouse good news for them but bad for gamers who had not got copies yet. Almost no oG stock at all.

Re: Really?
I just checked my Amazon account. It still shows the release date of May 20 and an expected delivery date of May 22. On schedule. As I said, I have never had a problem with Amazon.discok3 wrote:Do you have a copy now...delivered in the last couple of days..Swords and Scimitars???!!!...if so then I will get straight back on to them

Re: Swords and Scimitars?
I'm in the US and had a very similar problem with Amazon when I was supposed to get Rise of Rome and the day it was supposed to be shipped they sent me an e-mail telling me "sorry we have no stock." I was furious since I had ordered it a month earlier and sent them an e-mail telling them how angry I was and I'd go to BUY.com next time. They apoligized, gave me $5 bucks and also told me it was a problem with their supplier giving them accurate shipping dates. I have been an Amazon customer for 10 years and have never had a problem with them before so I tend to believe Amazon when they tell me they are not getting the supplies when they are told they would be getting them. Especially since it sounds like you had the same problem I did.discok3 wrote:OK...for the 2nd month on the trot I have received an e-mail from Amazon stating that there is a month delay on this title!!!

Yep... so far, there has been an online kerfuffle like this about Amazon just prior to every FoG release. And so far, Amazon has managed to deliver every release right on schedule. Once again, I am betting that the same thing will be true this time around, and also for Legions Triumphant, Eternal Empire, Decline and Fall, etc. etc.babyshark wrote:Hee hee! And so it begins. For the record, Amazon has always managed to deliver my army list books to me in a timely manner.

My e mail from Amazon said this....
"Richard Bodley-Scott (Author), Peter Dennis (Illustrator) "Field
of Glory 4: Swords and Scimitars: The Crusades Army List (Field of
Glory): Field of Glory: the Crusades Army Lists (Field of Glory)"
[Paperback]
Estimated arrival date: 05/06/08 - 25/06/08
We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes"
To be honest, as I've said in on The Miniatures Page, whilst the lists are certainly not poor by any stretch of the imagination, they don't exactly set the world on fire either and for me can be summed up by the phrase "rehashed DBM lists with pretty pics to sell Osprey books".
Having said that, and in the interests of balance, I should say that I can see the advantages of that in some ways and the rules themselves seem fine as far as I can see. I don't see anything intrinsically wrong in Osprey using them to sell books either, they have after all invested and are entitled to see a return. I just can't get myself steamed up about their non arrival though. If I was going to plan a Crusades era army today, I'd just use the DBM lists until Swords and Scimitars arrives. It's a good bet that you aren't going to be too far wrong.

If you bundle your Amazon orders together, they are shipped only when the latest item is released. For example, if you ordered Immortal Fire together with Swords and Scimitars, then Amazon will ship them together when the latter is released.
The secret is to place the orders individually, so that each item ships as soon as it becomes available. At least that has worked for me, every single time.
Cheers,
Scott
P.S. Overstock.com lists the exact same release date as Amazon U.S. - May 20, 2008.

Well, this is where the people desperate to design their armies hang out.willb wrote:shouldn't this thread be combined with the one on the main part of the forum? it is not really about army design which is the subject of this part of the forum.
How about a General Discussion sticky "Companion Release/Shipment Discussion" thread to consolidate innumerable future posts for this and forthcoming companion volumes?
That is an excellent idea, Mike! Then those who feel the need to vent over various retailers can do so to their hearts' content, and the rest of us can get on with our lives.MikeK wrote:How about a General Discussion sticky "Companion Release/Shipment Discussion" thread to consolidate innumerable future posts for this and forthcoming companion volumes?

Swords and scimitars - disappointing Byzantine DBM rehash
If the Komnenon Byzantine list is anything to go by, it is a bit of a DBM rehash.
The only changes to the Komnenon Byzantine list from DBM first edition are those I suggested for DBM edition 2 about 8-9 years ago and since then thinking has moved on. Birkenmeir's Development of the Byzantine Army, together with study of both primary Byzantine sources (Kinnamos and Choniates) for the later C12th all question the FOG assumptions about:
the massive (and in the list) non optional predominance of mercenaries in the later C12th,
many elements of army composition and
options for ally and subject contingents.
At the very least the list should provide latitude for a more Byzantine composed alternative.
Now where do I post the details of the above arguements so that they will get a hearing?
