OT - wargamming tables - fold out ?

Post by Keith »

Hi all
I'm in the process fo getting a new shed in the back yard , it will be 10m x 3.5m
I intend to have about half of the shed for painting and playing. The other half will be workshop and mtorbike. ( more hobbies!)

Justy wondering if anyone has any ideas for a foldout table , that could easily hinge or fold out from the wall ?
Any examples ?
Probably just a 6x4 table. Or maybe 7x4 would fit OK. Nice to have a bit on the edge to place casualties etc.

If you use a 6x4 mat on top of it, a slightly greater width and that extra foot of length can come in quite handy for rules, dice, etc. I suggest a slight lip and the rim to keep things from sliding off easily. Whether hinge or other fixture to hold in firmly in place on the wall, you want it braced at the wall end and at minimum some sturdy legs near the other end that lock firmly in place.

Since you have a workshop and permanent space for a table, builiding a permanent wargames table may be an option. One feature of a table that I envy allows mutliple games to be "saved" while leaving the table free for other games. Some of this involves pull out drawers the feature I like best is that the top of the wood table has a rim that allows an additional layer of table to be lowered firmly into place on top of it, with the surface sufficiently higher that the battle on the original "tabletop" is undisturbed and secure against marauding cats, children and other mishaps.

Or, it would not be hard to use this same approach to give you two layers for your table while it is in its dropped-down position. If the top is sectioned lengthwise it could also be used to enable hidden deployments.

Just some ideas. I envy the space you have to play with- good luck!

Ping pong tables are 9'x5' and fold up fairly compactly. Worst case scenario you could even play ping pong on one.

Thanks for the idea Mike , I will aim to have a sunken table where I can lay a board over the top and make it dual purpose and be able to leave a game set up underneath. I will have to do some thinking.

The top add-on was wood with full side panels.

Primitive ASCII art of table/add on interface follows (ignore ...s- they are for spacing):

============== ADD-ON TOP
|||
||
||

...________________TABLE
_|

=============ADD-ON TOP
|||||
||..||
||..||

...M
__M___________ TABLE

The side panels screen the table from the sides but aren't necessary for support. A table with peg holes near the edges so "legs" of the add-on can rest in them should suffice to lock the top in position and provide enough support.

The key thing is that the table and the top be able to support players leaning or even sitting on it (or maybe dancing drunkenly atop it, depending on the crowd).

I used to have a table which folded up against the wall - I think it was 8' x 4'6".
The end legs had wheels so that it wheeled out - confusing ASCII ART follows:

:idea:
Now, all you need to do, is make the table out of sheet metal, have magnetic bases, and you can leave the game in play and fold it up! :lol:

:( for anyone on the table edge near the wall as you fold it up.

Seriously though another Idea beyond the table cover mentioned above. I have seen a pulley style game table. Where you can lower it from above. Not sure I really dig it, but it is worth mentioning, at least just for Brainstorming reasons.

(EDIT NOTE: for those of you that notice how bad ASCII art appears in a post. IF you click QUOTE to a post that has ASCII art, it shows the ASCII Art as the author intended. EXample click the above folding table post that I quoted. It appears properly when you are viewing the post a quote reply.)

Code: Select all

Alternatively just highlight the ASCII art and click on the code button ;)

As to tables the best wargaming accessory I ever got was my architects plan chest. Essentially it is a 4'6" by 3'6" table with six 4' by 3' draws underneath it each about 3" high. It means I can setup long boardgames in the drawers and then if I want to play a miniatures game or pack up my second gaming table I can put the drawers back in the chest and everything stays in place.

Of course rather than descriptions or ASCII art you can always use photos

Very sexy photos. Two of those back to back would be enough for a 15's table.

I don't care about the photo's. But that is a one sexy table Hammy. I love it. I never thought to use a table like that. I come into contact with such tables frequently enough due to my trade.

I must bring one home. Do you think the office would notice it missing?

Now to accomadate a larger available floor space for the wifes approval, one could merely incorporate a 10' Ceiling and pulleys or a Hydrualic lift. :roll:

I got my table from the local council when I worked there and they were moving to computer drawing tools and microfilm so had loads of them going as scrap. It cost me £2.50 or at the prices when I bought it about 2 pints of beer :)
