Jon, from an earlier answer by you my understanding is that we're going to use the new version for this tournament?
Less than a week to go and it seems like there's a lot of bugs reported. I've only played one small scenario and didn't encounter any bugs as far as I can tell.
However, several new game mechanics took me by surprise...evading BGs taking losses and cohesion test for example. One of my skirmisher that evaded ended up instantly fragmented!
Movement is different, both in what is allowed and what is prevented. Can't tell for sure this early but it can be that quite a lot need to be relearned...
I'm fine with trying the new stuff in the tournament. If you can confirm so can I try to squeeze in a crash course before we start :D

Hi All

Jonathan apologies for including this in your comp.

Is there a link/forum explaining the new game mechanics. Hidde's example of evaders taking cohesion tests does not seem right to me. Numerous troops would evade or "retire in good order"?

It seems like there's a lot of bugs at the moment, and I'm confused as to why the new version isn't replacing old version. As t stands right now, we could run this tournament entirely on old version.

Right now, Im thinking we'll hope the situation becomes more clear in next few days. It seems as if the game isn't entirely "finished." Overall, it's impossible to run this tournament on new version until you can play MP DAG games anyways. Thoughts everyone?

I think the new version (the "Gold Candidate") is with Slitherine for approval right now. Then, if they think it is ready, they obviously have to get everything ready for the new release. That will take some time. Existing players presumably will still get it as a free upgrade, but new players will have to buy it from the shop. The only thing concerning me right now is that it seems that the new AI is weaker than the AI in the old version. This might be a problem because a lot of players don't play multi-player and new purchasers of the game might not be too impressed by a weak AI.

I am not going to enter this IF tournament but it might be a good idea to structure it so that you can start the matches with the old version but then easily switch to the new version should it be officially released while the competition is in progress. So that could mean qualifying groups of just 4 players and scheduled matches so that you have convenient little breaks throughout the tournament where you could switch versions if the opportunity arises. I cannot really do this in the FOGDL as it is a much bigger tournament so I have decided to wait now until the new version is officially released and the inevitable rush of bugs are sorted out as well.

personally I couldn't care less which version of the rules are used as long as they work, I'm only interested in competitive play, so if the new version of the rules are likely to spoil the game at this early stage of their release, I'd say use the old version. Early adopters always bear the brunt of bug fixing for the developers, they'd be better off having a specific non competitive tournament to fix bugs.

Yes, I've changed my mind after playing some more. Bugs aplenty; the invalid rear charge sometimes count as real, routers moving away 3-4 hexes and then disappear, evaders moving in all kinds of weird directions, more then one cohesion loss from separate impact the same turn.
And, not a bug but a game breaker for me, lightning fast resolution of AI(or opponent) turns.

Note to all players: we will be playing all games in OLD FOG and NOT FOG(U) until further notice. My plan is to split pool stage into two stages in case halfway through they announce they're discontinuing old FOG multiplayer. More instructions to follow.

We still need 4 more players!

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Hey,

I would be most interested in joining, however I am a complete beginner with regards to the game (have played a fair amount of FoG tabletop though), so not entirely sure if this is the right place for me to start? I have played a few games v. the AI and I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Zero multiplayer experience though.

Is a good idea for me to join up? Or would I be better trying to find someone more willing to play against a beginner?

Cheers,

Sam

Hi Sam

There was a FOG digital WIKI page(s) but unfortunately no more.

I didn't play multiplayer for about 2 to 3 weeks and was OK after a while but that was learning the ropes from the likes of pantherboy and mschund. I'd give it a go. Having tabletop experience is an advantage.

I am also sure players will help you out. during the comp.

This tournament is meant for all skill levels. Playing vs AI is good to get a hang of mechanics but vs players is where you really start improving. Players are really good at providing tips/feedback, especially if you say youre a new player and that you want lots of feedback.
