Exceeding core capacity

Post by Shank »

Long time player of PG, bought the game about 2 weeks ago and I can't tell you how much I was waiting for this game. Now that that is out of the way I was playing the mega campaign and I came to the Sevastopol Assault scenario. For those of you who played it and won a DV Kudos to you! It was the first time I had to restart the scenario and I did this MULTIPLE times. I realized that my army composition was not conducive achieving victory. Once i came to this conclusion i decided to change my army comp but realizing i was at 33/33 units I didn't know what to do. The solution was actually quite simple. In the "Pre-battle" when you have 33 units to place you can actually buy units to take you over the army cap , but you can still only place 33. I'm sure other people already know this, but I somehow missed this and so of course I had to start the whole campaign over. I'm not sure if this was intended by the game developers or not but it completely changed the way I play the game. During those late scenarios in the campaign when everyone is at the soft xp cap u can buy some more "rookies" and mix them in with the vets and get them xp too. This way when you eventually take losses in the 41' East because of their superior tanks it doesn't hurt near as bad. As stated earlier some scenarios require a different composition also so if you know your going to be slugging it out through city streets your going to want to bring more inf/art conversely some scenarios require more mobility and so on. Finding this added a level of game play to a game I already adore.

See you in Moscow,
Shank

TL:DR Before dropping your core units you can buy units to exceed the scenario cap, but still only place the amount specified by the scenario

I had to do the same in deployment, add a new flame panzer and some more green infantry for the meat grinder.
I have just finished Sevastopol assault with DV in last turn a few days ago but gotta say - half way there I saved, gave up and quit the game to give my brain a rest. I even decided to quit and go with siege instead but I had no save LOL so finally I went back in and managed to get a DV ;-)
Lost 3-4 units half of them green, most of my airforce reduced to shreds 3-4 str max, lost 5-6K prestige reinforcing and buying units mid mission - absolute meat grinder.
What pissed me off was the final stage of city assault, when I finally though I had it AI deployed 3x85mm AA and 2 152mm arty behind their marines - I think that was the exact moment I burst a blood vessel...

I generally don't like to restart scenarios, but this one beat me so bad the first go around I had to see if I could get the DV. I tried multiple methods, I must had restarted like 8 times at this point. Closest I got was knocking on the last obj, but could not get a DV with my army comp. In my new one I have used the flame tanks and if your careful with them they do work. Playing above the army cap is really nice because you can pick up those support units that you don't always need (Bridging inf,Flame Tanks, ect) and not have them take up precious slots when you don't need em.

By Sevastopol'41 i have an army counting over 50 core units.
The key to winning this battle is fielding alot of infantry(10-12) and artillery(4 17cm, 2 wurf and 3 SPArt). You have to beat through that city fast if you want to win.
2 tanks and 1 recon clear the path up untill city limits, then they progress just outside the city clearing enemy units while Stalingrad-light takes place within city limits.
