Vietnam ’65 Announced and in Beta!

Post by Surtur »

"No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.” (Richard Nixon – former US President)

Early 1965 – Regular US military units are deployed on Vietnamese soil. The American government sends massive support to South Vietnam to prevent the Viet Cong forces from the North unifying the entire country under the Communist banner. This Cold War conflict was not only fought with classic weapons, but also with unconventional tactics in order to gain support from civilians.

Vietnam ’65, the new game developed by Every Single Soldier, aims to capture this unique warfare duality. This is why the your main task is not to crush yout opponent as you usually do in other strategy games, but to win the hearts and minds of the local population! Your main focus will be to plan and execute counter-insurgency operations so that you will prevent villages falling under Viet Cong influence. Thanks to a refined AI and a randomly generated campaign map, you should be ready to face tough and surprising challenges!

This atypical multiplatform tactical game is now ready to enter the beta phase on both PC and iPad; and we invite players to help us test it! By signing up for the beta, players will have a chance to be selected to be one of the lucky few who will be able experience Vietnam ’65 before release and help us with the final touches, ensuring a smooth release later this year.

Players can sign up for the beta by clicking here.

Get more information on Vietnam ‘65 from its official PC and iPad product pages.

Hi everyone,

I get what you're saying vanRocko, that's exactly why I developed this game. There are any real Vietnam War strategy games on any platform.

This is a three hour strategy game that will have you playing 'just one more turn' and features all the iconic characteristics of the war.

Back in March last year, I sent a rudimentary prototype out to a few gaming websites, this is what they said

Rock, Paper, Shotgun :

"Enjoying a game that captures the challenges of counter-insurgency operations and the character of the Vietnam War better than any title I can think of."

"What keeps me COINing is the wonderful Vietnam War feel, and the fact that every setback feels plausible. I’m enjoying failure and, going by past experience, that’s a sure sign I’m in the presence of a strong design."

pockettactics :

"Vietnam'65 is a breath of fresh air"

"I’ve been playing a preview copy of forthcoming iOS wargame Vietnam ’65, and man this game is interesting."

Speaking of the RPS article, I do believe he has a point re. the artwork for the PC version.
It's one thing to use 3D art for an iOS version, but to entice the somewhat more hardcore PC users, some sort of pseudo-'cardboard-counter' graphics might not be an entirely bad idea.
If for no other reason than to stop people thinking 'yet another iOS piece of crap'

But it does look very interesting.
One thing that niggles me a little is the generic format of it. Not sure I'm wild about a procedural province defended by generic units that you can 'buy'.
On the other hand, a strictly historical context would severely cut back on the replay value, so there's that.
Guess we'll see in June. :D

Cheers,
Lars

It is true that with 3D style graphics assumptions as to whether the game is iTrash is valid.

I grew up on Squad Leader and also being ex-military, I do prefer and default to a tactical map and counters. It was a consideration in developing this game, in fact the prototype I developed was exactly that.

The reality is that on iPad/tablets, higher end 3D graphics are the standard. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, still play board and table games, but decided to go with the 3D model to make the game all inclusive to the iPad community.

Elements have survived, the game includes a full intelligence map, which is a 2D representation of the in game with counters and pins marking enemy sightings etc, so all is not lost.

At the end of the day the game should be judged on the gameplay model, but secretly I agree with you :)

PS The original prototype is freely downloadable from my website.

You guys HAVE to fix the front page where it says, "Enrol for Beta now". Please fix the misspelling of "Enroll".

It is driving me crazy!

Wow! You're right! I never knew this, but enrol is indeed a correct spelling outside North America. It just looks extremely weird to me. :?

Depending on the games reception, we will certainly consider localizing Vietnam'65.

As more modern conflicts, most definitely, any and many counterinsurgency wars fit this model very well :)
