Alternative Battle of Toro

Post by ZeaBed »

I just had to do this.

Alternate sourced version of certain aspects of the Battle of Toro or Peleagonzalo, 1476 AD.

Despite the increasing proportion of infantry in battlefields of the late medieval era, this historical battle was an exception. The Castilian-Aragonese had outraced some of its infantry in the chase; others were still far back in the rear, guarding recently captured stragglers from the Portuguese-Castilian rearguard, while most of the infantry units on which Afonso V depended had just arrived from the strongly invested Toro garrison.

This alternately sourced version of the OOB may help explain the center formation that the Castilian-Aragonese adopted and why, according to some sources, their right wing consisted only of light horse/light cavalry, a very weak option.

The Castilian-Aragonese had no artillery or firearms in the field, again according to this version. The Portuguese-Castilian had firearms and some light artillery.

Version sources set the battle a bit farther south from Toro (appearing as ‘west’ in the scenario map's perspective) than the original version. The farming settlement (‘caserío’) of Pelayo González, was in a different location in 1476 than is the present-day Peleagonzalo area. The site of the battle has been identified as a field known to this day as La Sangradera (the Killing Floor or, literally, the Place of Bleeding – i.e., a designation such as an abbatoir).
