Clarifications on Autobreak using the calculator

Post by Brainsnaffler »

Hi guys

I put the republican roman army onto the army calculator, and it stated that Triarii (BG of 2 bases) autobreak on 2 bases, but, the rules state that if a group is ever reduced to one base, then it is removed from the game. So, do I remove the group if it loses one base, or do I follow what the calculator is telling me?

Sadly they autobreak as soon as they lose a base, which could be in impact, shooting or melee, but the routing base is removed in the JAP...unless pursuers contact it, when it's removed anyway, I think.

The calculator is correct. A BG of 2 bases of Superior or Elite troops doesn't ever autobreak.

However, if it is reduced to 1 base it is removed at the end of the JAP.

This means that if it loses a base in the impact phase, the surviving base fights on in the melee phase, then is removed at the end of JAP.

You are both correct.
They autobreak only after the second loss. However if they are reduced to 1 base they will be removed at the end of the JAP - however they don't break and run before then. So if they loose a base in the impact phase they continue to fight in the melee phase, if they autobroke they would rout at the end of the impact phase, not fight in the melee phase, and cease to exist at the end of the JAP.

Right! I see now why BG of 2 superiors/elites can't autobreak!

My situation was this...a BG of two Companions Cav, elites, charged in impact phase. They lost the impact, failed the CT and lost a base! They were already disrupted, dropped -4 on their dice roll and even with a reroll, scored 2 so dropped two levels and broke! Such was the nature of sacrifice, but at least I now know they weren't autobroken, just all dead!

They weren't autobroken, but they were broken. So they correctly fled (in impact phase and JAP) and dispersed (at the end of the JAP) rather than fight to the last man (and disperse at the end of the JAP) like brave men.

Shame on them! (Dishonour before Death!)

Perhaps they we so ashamed that they fell on their swords at the end of the JAP. (Death after Dishonour!)

Sadder than all the above, they were running away, got caught in the pursuit and were slaughtered to a man!

Death DURING dishonour?

Seriosly, one of the great things in FOG is that things like this can happen, expect the unexpected every now and then!....like when a group of my humble Hungarian levy archers comprehensively outshot then outfought a BG of Janissaries, who then routed and began a train of disasters across the Turkish lines...the odds may be against you but the Fates may have other ideas!
