Formation Changes with Compulsory Charging

Post by spike »

Robert was supposed to have done this  but he seems to have forgotten.

By the "strict wording" in the rules (and the diagram), changing formation in charges by one base width to bypass friends, must contract FIRST before they charge.
However where a unit needs to charge because it fails a CMT not to charge AND there is no room to the rear to complete the contraction (, due to say Impassable terrain), it seems nonsense to say that the charge cannot happen.

We (Me, Robert and Hammy) were unable to find in the rules, if the impetuous unit should burst thru the unit to the front, because the charging unit should contract the one base width. Sense dictates that EITHER the unit KINKS (temporarily) to pass the friendly unit in the situation of an impetuous charge only OR bursts thru the unit to the front.

Can this be FAQ(ed) to clarify this point

From what you describe I think this is a burst through. But I'm sure others will have a different view.

Interestingly FoGR changed this section to allow the contraction during the charge - which is a much more sensible approach. Maybe we should do the same in A&M?

And V2 now allows contractions at the start or end of normal moves

V1 allowed a contraction at the start or end of normal moves too?

Really, someone should have explained that to the Britcon umpires a few years ago as they couldn't find it.
