Core force Boredom

Post by lancerunolfsson »

I played the tutorial and am well into the 1st campaign. Playing at normal setting (I'm not really great at these games). I'm not sure I could do the objectives with less than I have. But it seems like the deal is you just buy a bunch of artillery to actually kill stuff, a few tanks mostly to screen the artillery and a few infantry to take objectives that tanks can't enter (are there any that tanks can enter?). Whats more there seems to be no reason to buy but a single type of each. The most expensive in every case. I always have plenty of money to buy replacements in game. I think that there should be a more gradual increase in unit availability or something so that there is some pressure to make choices. Also in the Old 5 Star generals games if you completed a mission faster you would get new units not yet available for purchase as a reward. I miss that feature. Is there any reason to try to complete the missions faster in Armageddon.

Also I am getting from the other posts that in later campaigns there is the same army core problem just a few units you need.

Are the Salamander Scouts the only recon unit it would be nice to be able to buy something better? It would be nice if recon could split move like in the old games.

I think you pretty much sum it up. And once you get to Act 2 you probably end up disbanding some of your units to make room for space marine units. So there is no reason to get overly attached to anything save your artillery, and maybe some tanks.

In the case of the Infantry its hard to get attached they don't live very long if you use them for anything!

I used a lot of infantry in Act 1 and managed to get through it ok on challenging - although i did suffer a fair number of losses.

My favorites were the Mortar unit (great in city combat) and the Rough Riders (excellent movement). My Ratlings were the most durable though - making it to about 7 skulls i think.

Now in Act 2 i only have 3 infantry units from Act 1 - the Ratlings (now on 8 skulls), Rough Riders and Mortar. The Rough Riders regularly die, but i just buy new ones to replace them.

"Most" of my core force was alive and well experienced - with many exceptions, like Command Infantries and some other infantries which almost never died, but often suffered too many casualties, resulting a lower Requisition for me and lost experience to them.

They were until ... until the two "last turns" in Act 1.

I won't give any spoiler though.
I will just say that The Imperial Guard shed much blood at that time.

Half of my 10-skull Snipers died there, and half of my 10-skull artillery, alonq with all my vehicle support force.
And only in the very end ; they survived until that, and pretty well too.
I admit I was on the point of leaving the game... until the light appeared :)

.. after Act 1, things became easier, and I only lost some infantries and light vehicles I chose to risk, and didn't care about much.

I do agree that having some hit and run unit can give them some real value (especially the flyer that are too weak actually). But I want to say taht there are lot of different recon unit later in the game : ratling sniper, Space Marine Scout, Scout titan, SM Scout bike, the sentinel is a recon unit too... After I agree that the system make a call to take the best unit when ou can but that the easy way (though you need some Titans for late game you don't need a whole army of them).

And to answer your question, there are some objectives that can be taken by tanks either on open ground or on road in city (the vehicule can enter city along the road).

I strongly suspect this new 1.02 patch will go quite a ways to alleviating this issue, give it a whirl and we'd like to hear more feedback! :D
