Generals and auto-break

Post by Kineas1 »

If a general is in the front rank of a unit that vanishes due to auto-break in the JAP, what happens to him? In our game, we placed him with the nearest friendly withing 7MUs, but it was a stretch, and it "felt" odd. I'm sure someone will now point out the pertinent rule, but neither of us could find it or remember seeing anything on the subject.

You did right. See page 50 in the rules.

A bit more precisely....

The BG is removed at the end of the JAP so will rout first

The general can move in the JAP as usual - your opponents will presumably have had a go to kill him on a 10-12 if they kept up in initial pursuit.

So basically there is one decent chance to kill a general with a routing BG and the mechanics are exactly the same whether autobroken or normally dropped to BRK. The only difference is that the BG is removed at the end of the JAP.

See page 168 for the full sequence - the order is important.

Usually twice, even if reduced to 1 base. Once immediately and once in the JAP. They are not removed till the end of the JAP.

We wanted them to have a chance to cause mayhem in their army's rear echelons. (Especially elephants who are particularly prone to autobreaking).

I think that this explains why some games have gone on so long. Heh. I can't wait...

Situation:
A battlegroup of 3 Average Armoured Cavalry, Lancers with a commander fighting in the front rank, lose melee combat and miss their deathroll. Reduced to two elements (>40%) they autobreak immediately, rout and are pursued by two BGs who keep up, inflicting two casualties, eliminating the whole BG. The commander now stands alone, in contact with the pursuers.

What happens with the commander :?:
1. It moves to a friendly BG within 7" immediately.
2. It can move in the JAP to a friendly BG within 7".
3. It is destroyed.

First, roll once to see if he dies (10-12). p109

If he lives, he escapes if he can move to and join any friendly BG within his normal move (not passing through enemy).
p50

If not, he is taken prisoner and his head is hacked off and mounted on the point of a spear . . . . OK, I am embellishing at this point.

Great, thanks, that's what we did. The commander was with a Komnenan Byzantine cavalry group that tried to hold a charge of a Seljuq Ghilman and a Turcoman LH BG. In the previous turn the Byzantines were shot at by 2 BG of Ghilman and the same Turcomans, disrupting him and inflicting one casualty. Impact went OK for the Byzantines, but overlaps meant a certain death in melee.
However, the tide will be turned now, as the commander now hides in a Varangian guard unit of 6, facing the downhill Seljuqs who rashly pursued the Byzantine cavalry :D

Fantastic battle BTW, the most fun battle I have played with FoG so far, even though it is only 600 points and I am playing the Komnenan starter army on a 150cm by 120cm table.
