Immortal Fire - Classical Greek List - Confusion

Post by JerryA92656 »

In the Classical Greek list there are a number of entries that use the words "upgrade" and "downgrade". What exactly does this mean? Upgrade and downgrade from what? Is it from the "Hoplites" line that is just under Cavalry?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jerry,

The upgrades/downgrades concern the Hoplites. So for instance, you can upgrade up to 36 stands of the initial
24-160 possible to spartan citizen hoplites heavy armour superior drilled off spear( if your list doesn't use anything after 460 BC).

Ok - I believe I understand. As an example I would like to take 48 Spartan Hoplite bases (before 460).

The first 24 are 24 * 9 = 216, the next 24 are going to be "upgrade to spartan citizens" which are 24 * 13 = 312. For a total of 528.

Is that correct?

I don't think so. I think it means you must have at least 24 stands of hoplites but no more than 160 stands of hoplites and any of those stands up to a maximum of 36 can be upgraded to Spartans. Stands you don't upgrade will be 9 points and stands you do upgrade will be 13 points. If you want 48 stands of hoplites only 36 could be Spartans.

I didn't make my example clear enough. Out of the 48 I only wanted to upgrade 24. I understand that there is a 6 - 36 restriction on the Spartan citizens.

While upgrades or downgrades have their own minima and maxima the total number of stands of the up or downgraded troops may not exceed the maxima of the initial troop type.

Consider

Blokes with pointy sticks 30-60
upgrade blokes with pointy sticks to blokes with pointy sticks and shields 20-40
downgrade blokes with pointy sticks to chained prisoners with nothing 0-40

You could have:
40 blokes with pointy sticks and 20 with pointy sticks and shields (meets the minima for shielded and does not exceed the blokes maxima)
0 blokes with pointy sticks, 20 with pointy sticks and shields and 10 chained prisoners (meets the shielded minima and the blokes minima but all blokes up or downgraded)

But not:
30 blokes with pointy sticks, 20 with pointy sticks and shields and 20 chained prisoners (there are 70 all told and the maxima for blokes is 60)
