I was wondering, is it best to follow the Axis historical strategy or is there a more optimum option?
I've only really played against the AI so not sure what works best against humans.
So, is it really best to go Poland, Denmark, Norway, Low Countries, France etc or not?
I've tried a few options and not bothering to take France early on seems to work better, I can then go for Barbarossa in 1940 and take Moscow before the end of the year - this is against AI on hardest level, but the AI is pretty dumb!
Once Russia falls France and UK are easy meat, usually don't quite have time to take USA though.

Re: Axis best strategy?
That is very hard to answer. It seems like players have their favorite strategies for each side. So it's about playing style too.
If you're not very experienced with the game then following the historical path will at least give you a decent strategy. I'm sure there are other strategies that can give even better results if you know how to execute your plan.

This will never work against a human player of an average skill levelI've tried a few options and not bothering to take France early on seems to work better, I can then go for Barbarossa in 1940 and take Moscow before the end of the year - this is against AI on hardest level, but the AI is pretty dumb!
Re: Axis best strategy?
Against the AI you can take out the US, but have to invade Canada in early 1942 (3-5 corps) or early 1943 (up to 10 corps). If you invade in 1944, the US can't be taken without MASSIVE luck, but Canada will usually fall. The AI has serious weaknesses. My Sealions take London most of the time because, for some strange reason, the British quite often evacuate London at some point & I just drop a para into it.
Against a human player, the early flow (Poland, Denmark/Norway combo, Belgium/Holland combo and France) starts you off well. At that point, Sealion, Yugoslavia and/or Greece, what to do about the Med depends on your skill vs the Allied players skill. Only certainty I can see is that while the Axis shouldn't take wild gambles, the balance of power tends to go more and more towards the allies as time goes on, so the Axis can't just take the safest path early in the game and needs to take some calculated risks to keep as much pressure on the Allies for as long as they can. About the only strategy that is ALWAYS "right" is to kill as many opposing units (especially high exp ones) as you can, while preserving your own. An army with higher exp will always maul one with lower exp.

There is a book called " How Hitler could have won world war 2 - the fatal errors that led to nazi defeat" by Bevin Alexander. Check it out, against the computer AI some of his points work out.
