15mm Egyptian Phalangites

Gidday all,

I'm quite keen to build a Later Ptolemaic army and wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations for good figures for the pre-55 BC Egyptian Phalangites and the post-55 BC "Phalangites." I am assuming these are pretty well one and the same.

Having said that, given that the post-55 BC have the option to be average would they be a mix of the Egyptian and Macedonian, or just the Macedonian or what?!

I'd stick with the Xyston egyptian phalangites for them all. 55bc is pretty late for madedonian style toga guys.

First Corp has a range of specifically Ptolemaic figures

That's 28mm though.

Looking at the figures at the bottom of the Palestrina mosaic, a case could be made for using generic Hellenistic phalangites. Wikipedia has the mosaic as being pre-100 BC.

Another thing to note is the large Judaean and Arab emigration to Egypt to serve as soldiers. Though Hellenized a great deal, it wouldn't be unreasonable to use figures from a Maccabean revolt range in your army.

The Ptolemys also hired Libyan and even Ethiopian mercenaries occassionally, most likely as skirmishers.

Nice. Thanks gents.

I was leaning very heavily toward the Xyston ones. They're lovely looking minis and having had it up to here *waving hands above head* painting Essex pikes for a Later Low Countries list, they look like they'll be a nice change.

Using some of the lighter equipped Macabees and similar would be a good variation for the lighter troops. Thanks for the cunning plan.
