Movement in Ravenna

Post by OldGiants »

I'm puzzled about the movement costs of the colunelas on the left wing of the Spanish, the ones behind the fort squares. The tooltips provide no explanation, in fact they add to the mystery.

Start with the colunela on the far left of the Spanish line (the right side of the screen). If I click on it, it the possible movement squares highlighted show it can move forward two squares if it stays outside the fort wall, but only one square if it stays inside the fort walls. When I use the tooltips to examine movement costs, the first square moved into says 6/10 for both first square. The second square shows 10/10 outside the wall, however the second square inside the fort is not highlighted. Why?

Further some other units two squares behind the wall can move forward two squares but others can move only one. I really don't why this is happening as the tooltips do not explain these movement costs very well.

What is going on here?

Just guessing from having played that scenario.

It may be the "dead ground" cost more for movement. There's a lot of "dead ground" inside the fortifications.

Dead ground it is. Dead ground costs 4 and fortifications costs 6MPs, so the outer unit needs to move through 2 fortification spaces, which it cannot do; while the inner unit can move 1 dead ground and one fortification for 10 MPs.

The problem for me was that all the spaces have the same color/design with only the fortification border distinguishing from the others.

Is there an easy way to discern dead ground from open ground at a glance; perhaps a setting I cannot as yet find?

Dead ground has no effect on movement - it is the same cost to enter as open terrain. It is the fortification squares that cost more.

There is no way to see which is dead ground without mousing over the squares.
