What does fortication, openness, and damage mean in the skirmish editor?

It means how many of these terrain objects appear on the map or how damaged the map is.

On the army lists the mechanized corps army for both the Germans and soviets appear twice before going back to random

Are you sure they are not different periods of the war? They have different equipment int eh early and late war.
