Battle of Seminara, Italian Wars.

Post by Champagne_Tiger »

Wow! What a tough task it is for the Spanish/Italians to defeat the French and Swiss mercenaries!

I have tried a couple of times, but, the battle seems unbalanced. There are always the many other great scenarios to try !

Anybody win yet in this scenario on the default difficulty setting?

I've tried twice on "Sergeant-Major" level and got smashed both times.

Since then, I ran a small, pot-luck, Italian Wars skirmish -- which was tense and very close, but I won.

I'm in the middle of Fornovo, now -- holding my own.

There are some nice hills behind the Spanish positions

I thought defending the stream would help in the first go. I lost.
I did use the hills on my right flank in the second go. I lost.

Hmmm.

I squeaked by with a win on the sergeant-major level. You need to:

Use the hills. Xbows on the high hills to the left, swordsmen to the right on the lower hills. Alternate swordsmen and arquebusier to get the length you need. The AI will focus on the swordsmen, which will leave gaps into which the shooters can swarm and start firing into flanks. Also (although I'm not convinced its the right strategy) I used all of my gendarmes on the hill on the far right to support the light cav on that flank. I also sent a bunch of Xbows to help as well, and managed to get one into the BUA before the French arrived. These guys all eventually died, but they took a number of units with them and caused the AI to commit all of his horse on my right, leaving the flank of the infantry clear. Ultimately I killed all of the French foot, and with the casualties the French suffered from my horse, it was enough for a win.

Hi Matt,

Glad to see you here. (If Matt has to break a sweat winning it, it must be hard)

Yeah -- I was going to say -- if Matt is finding SMG a challenge, I don't need to flog myself so much...

My first time at Seminara, I just expected to get more juice off of the stream -- so didn't consider dropping back onto the hills. Second go, I thought I could get enough edge by playing the hills on the right. I'll give a full hill drop another go.

I'm 7-6 vs SMG, so far. Only easy win was at Fornovo. Two of the wins were embarrassingly rematches after losing the first go.

Hi Richard, yes, I'm enjoying the game very much. It's hard enough to give me a challenge but simple enough in mechanics to appeal to my 10 year old son. A good balance I think. Need to spend a bunch more time with it though...

I got to within a couple of % of winning, second time around, on the second difficult level by retreating to the hills to the rear and then waiting, and sending a few skirmishing units to break up the swiss infantry line and send a couple of their units chasing after crossbowmen.

59/60, but it's a win. Blimey that was hard work. Retreat to the hills, keep the French Gendarmes chasing some light cavalry away from the action. Cross every appendage and extremity.
