It looks quite viable under FOG with good cavalry, light and heavy chariots, and lots of Protected MF in mixed BGs 1/2 light spear, swordsmen, 1/2 bow - similar to the Assyrians.

Are the mixed MF BG's compulsory as the old DM list the main inf were purely Ax

Only for royal army troops. Guard and Provincial troops can be separate.

Thats a relief, although I will probably still have to buy and paint a number of archers.
