15mm or 28mm

Fellow Commanders,

I am new to the FOG system and am starting with the Ancient and Medieval. Going forward, I will probably delve into the Napoleonic too.

A quick question, and apologies if this has been answered elsewhere:

Taking into account the market availability first (but also the playability aspects), would you recommend collecting 15mm or 28mm minis for the FOG:AM? And how about FOG:N? The most important aspect to me is the ability to get the starter armies from the companion books.

You will find more opponents, greater choice and less expense with 15mm. 28mm look nicer

I would find out what people near you are playing.

In FOG N I have both. But my 25mm are based on a 15mm frontage for ease of games.

My gaming group are all new to FOG and we are going to decide to stick to either 15mm or 28mm before we start buying the minis. All things equal, we all prefer 28mm as they look nicer, however, the problem with 28mm is that I have noticed the choice of starter armies is much more limited compared to 15mm. If this is the case, we will then most probably go for the 15mm.

I agree 15mm is the best place to start and maybe stay. Smaller lighter, cheaper easier to transport and store if for no other reasons. I have a friend coming over this am travelling 2 hours on public transport with his 15mm Napoleonic army. No way could he do that with 25/28mm and another came over from Wales for a few days in July with big 15mm Dacian army -ditto. Easier to paint too- more forgiving especially with ink washes these days.

I began in 20/25mm in the 1970's but had switched to 15mm by the 1980's when 15mm became more available. The range and quality as you say is high now.( It was not in the mid 70's).

Since then in the last decade I have rediscovered 25/28mm mainly through the availability of good quality plastics the ranges for which are expanding steadily though still nothing like as wide as 15mm metals. No easier to store of course but cheaper. For Romans. Germans, Hoplites , medieval and now even Sumerians and early chariot armies there is some good stuff around and you can add a few metals for Commanders and unusual types.

But they do look the business especially 28 mm Pikes so maybe for special projects eg in a club it can be done in that scale- That was how I first got into ancients in 1972 - a club Punic Wars project with us each bringing figures to the table.
