Encountering Enemy you Did not Charge (v1)

Post by Eques »

What do you do (rules-wise) when your path is blocked by an enemy BG that you did not charge in the Impact Phase?

???

You stand around and wait until you DO charge. Baffled by the question TBH.

Any enemy BG in your charge path is a target, regardless whether it was the declared target. So, if you declare a charge against BG A, and BG B will be contacted by your charge, it too is a target. Some troop types are restricted when charging and may require a CMT or be prohibited from charging into certain situations. If one of these situations applies the charge cannot be declared, or may only take place if the CMT is passed. An enemy BG may intercept the charger by moving into the charge path. If this happens, the charge is carried out and will contact the intercepting BG before it reaches the original target, but may still reach the original target by stepping forward.

So presumably you mean in the movement phase and that you did not charge anyone in the impact phase?

There are two main effects. One, the BG physically blocks you i.e. you can't move through it. Two, the "restricted area" rules are likely to come into effect (unless you're battle troops and they are skirmishers) meaning that you have to react to the restricted are in certain limited ways.

The situation was that my opponent forgot, or did not realise, that he could have charged in the impact phase (this was a friendly not a tournament game)

He then tried to move his unit in the movement phase but realised that my BG was in his path.

The best procedure here is, if it's logical that he would have charged in the impact and you haven't moved on very far, just rewind that bit of the battle a bit and do the impact, then movement. In fact you often see this in tournament play: "sorry, I forgot to move these, do you mind if I do?", etc.

Of course there is a limited. For example if it's a case of "if only I'd known how the other impacts would go then I'd have charged this lot in too" is clearly a no-no

In which case I guess they would stop 1 MU away? Or no?

Under the rules they can't do anything to get into combat unless they can get into an overlap position... and then only if they are already in frontal contact.

They will be limited in their move by the rules covering ZOI's and wheeling etc.

They can go as close as they want without touching.
