Basing

Post by ravenflight »

Hi All,

Well, the Japanese are nearing completion. I'm really hoping to have them at MOAB, but I'm not 100% sure. The definitely won't be 100% finished (I don't think) but I'm hoping that it will just be the Mon's on the Sashimono's that are missing... that's the final step.

Anyway, I have my mounted samurai in 4 packs and I'm considering basing them on 40x40mm bases. This will give me a few extra mm to play diorama with. Additionally I'm thinking of basing 2 bases on a single 80mmx40mm base. Any thoughts on this?

Advantages:
1) I will be even more able to dioramise the base;
2) Movement will be slightly easier (only moving one base instead of two);
3) Makes it more clear which direction the 2x2 bases are facing if there is any query (being 40mm deep means that they will be equally deep as wide, so sometimes can cause a bit of confusion, with a 40x80mm base in front it will be fairly obvious which way is 'front'; and,
4) ??? Any thoughts?

Disadvantages:
1) On the rare circumstances where you have a column 1 base wide it will not fit (can get around by placing the bases at 90 degrees to method of travel... not pretty, but is a very rare circumstances, so I think this will be ok);
2) On the impact phase will not be able to step forward (but can replace with bases which will be able to step forward from the back); and,
3) ??? Any thoughts?

Have you considered keeping discrete bases and using a sabot? I base on magnetic sign material and have some very thin metal for larger bases that I use to double-up (or more) on bases.

Yeah, I've considered that, but that doesn't help me with the diorama side of things.

Go 40x40 and make some "change"

The turning thing will happen sometimes.
