AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
The Swedish army has disembarked in northern Germany. A Swedish force, advancing inland, is confronted by an Imperial force...
I set Force Selection off, giving the AI control over what units will be in my army.
Imperial Deployment:
The enemy battleline wil enjoy the advantage of higher ground, it will ba a battle of manouver, I should not attack into the highground but manouver around. I decide to mass my best units, the Kuirassiers and the veteran infantry on my right flank, the traditional post of honour, while I leave my raw Infantry and the arquebussiers in my left flank. I will advance with the right flank through the clear terrain while refusing my left behind the rough terrain. I will keep my dragoons in the woods as a precaution against enemy surprises through those woods.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
Swedish deployment and 1st turn
The Swedish army is stronger in cavalry (9 squadrons of Horse+1 Arquebussier vs 5 Kuirassiers+2 Arquebussiers) but inferior in quality (all units average vs my superior Kuirassiers). I have 6 Tercios vs his 5 Battalions, but my infantry is average or raw while his is superior.
So, I have advantage in numbers of infantry and in quality of cavalry.
The Swedish have deployed 4 detached musketeers on his right, to take advantage of the wooded terrain. However in doing so they have left his inferior cavalry without support. Besides the Swedish deployment have spread his cavalry all along his battleline. That reinforces my original plan, I will attack from my right as soon as possible, hoping to overwhelm his cavalry and then with a combined attack of infantry to the front and cavalry to the flank rout his infantry.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
1st Imperial turn
Moving to contact. I advance Horse Arquebussiers in the left flank, they could be effective against those detached musketeers, especially by charging around their flanks. My idea is to delay them as much as possible while the main attack goes on in the right flank.

2nd Imperial turn
Another Swedish squadron has been discovered behind the line in the right, things are going to be tough but we are moving confidently forward

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
3rd Imperial turn
Things not going well, I am having problems deploying my infantry and I think I got my Horse Arquebussiers too far, and against my initial plan, I am moving my raw recruits to support my exposed Arquebussiers. The only good news for the moment is that the Swedish cavalry remains stationary so far.
4th Swedish turn
On my left they have moved one squadron in support of their foot. If I charge the infantry I will expose my Arquebussiers to that cavalry countercharge. Since I am only trying to delay action here I will avoid engage by advancing through the gap, hopefully my lighter cavalry will be fast enough to avoid being chased down by the Swedish cavalry.

In the right flank the Swedish cavalry has moved into contact with the support of some infantry. In the center the infantry battalions are forming into a sort of line. I hope the rough terrain disordering the Swedish will prevent them charging me across the whole line, but my position is rather exposed.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
4th Imperial turn
My arquebussiers advancing through the gaps as planned. My dragoons down to the left hand corner have being routed just by the more effective fire of Swedish musketeers
.
In the right flank my cavalry charges the whole enemy line, that yields no ground so far.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
5th Swedish turn
Left flank:
My Horse arquebussiers are attracting a lot of attention. That is good as they are meant to, I hope to keep them out of harm for some turns, we will see.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
Center:
The Swedish salvo infantry has charged, and my line is in danger. As you can see, one Tercio is fragmented and another one disrupted.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
Right Flank:
Here things are going much better. One enemy squadron already routed in melee and the supporting Swedish battalion was hit by the pursuing Kuirasier in the rear and is fragmented. Hopefully I will quickly finish the enemy here and turn to help my pressed infantry, but will they arrive in time?

Humm, I am afraid my arquebussiers are doomed. I misjudged their speed, they are going to be chased down by the enemy next turn, and probably routed inmediately. The AI is ruthless in the exploitation of any miscalculation on the part of the human player, like I did here.

6th Imperial turn
Right Flank
I am routing his flank, but not as fast as I expected, and the Swedish keep moving reinforcements, so the situation is still far from decided

One of my tercio is routed, the rest of the line holding so far. The raw infantry has disrupted the advancing Swedish and with artillery support I hope to rout that Battalion up in the screen, That could be the start of a flanking movement.

Re: AAR Imperial army vs Swedish army 1630
7th Imperial turn
Right flank
After much charge and countercharge, it looks like my plan has failed. I have only 2 squadrons left and the enemy still have 4 squadrons and in a better position. My kuirassiers proved superior in the fighting but the AI was getting flank attacks to them from his second line. I may have better used a 2 lines deployment with a narrow front instead of the single line. I hoped to get some outflanking from the exterior of the line but that is difficult against a 2 lines deployment and the AI, as always, was very competent handling that.

Center
Here things look no better. My raw recruits managed to rout the Swedish Battalion, but the Tercio down in the screen is lost for sure. I can bring my raw Tercios to the fight in the center, but it will take at least 2 turns.

Left
As expected, one arquebubussier unit is routed while the other is flying away.
