noob looking for opponent

Post by kenh000 »

Just getting back into the game. The computer is fun to play against, but, I don't think I am getting any better playing it. Looking for someone to give me a game or two and hopefully, after the battles, explain to me what I did wrong, what I could have done better, etc. I have RoR and LT.

Hi there

PM me if you want some games and i'll stick a couple of private games up.You just need to get your head around the game mechanics and you'll be fine.I'm no expert by the way,far from it but plenty of time for games. There's a FOG wiki on the forum, some very good stuff on there.Just batter the challenges out for MP and you'll learn from your mistakes,i still am.Great community in the server but if you want to try stuff out just gimme a shout.

Feel free to shoot me a PM as well. I don't have a lot of games going right now.

Well, I just bought the base game and the "Rise of Rome" add-on pack this past weekend.
I've been gaming for a while but the last Ancients I played were the SPI "Phalanx" and "Centurion" (pre-digital)
I've had a couple of games against the AI, lost 4 learning the mechanics, won "Caesar at Bay 55BC" as Britons (yay! the Poms!) today. Will attach a screenshot of the victory screen if I can edit this post later.

I am amazed (and somewhat bewildered) at the great range of army lists and battles and I grasp the general principle of the DAG but I never played miniatures so army point values are another new facet to be tackled.

I'm open to PBEM or Multiplayer games.
Because I'm retired I can do several turns per day although I'm in a UTC +10 hours timezone so there may be a disjunct there.

What I want to know is:
Is there a graded list of standard battles for me to work through? (Easy to Difficult)
Is there a chronological list?
Are there any lists of national or ethnic battles to establish a timeline? eg Roman Kingdom, Roman Republic, Punic, Iberian to make finding an appropriate battle easier?

How does a "campaign" work?

Kind of. There is a list of scenarios where each side is rated by a percentage of winning. This will tell you how difficult playing as each side in each scenario really is. It can be found here: http://fog-pc-wiki.wikispaces.com/Scenarios.

Yes. When you go to make a scenario battle, click on the top of the year column and it will organize the list of battles chronologically.

Good question. I've never played one and they don't appear to be overly popular based on the few posts in the campaigns section of the forum. Check out http://fog-pc-wiki.wikispaces.com/Campaign+Rules for rules for past campaigns to get a feel for them. Campaigns are one of the big holes in the community right now.
