Space Stations?

Post by bz249 »

Probably a stupid question

Are space stations meant to be included in the first part of the game? Salyut and Skylab are well within the era of the Race for the Moon. And there was even more on the drawing boards. A nice space station related mission tree (maybe with the proposed wet workshop Venus flyby as the culmination) could add a nice sidetrack.

If not highly confidential, what are the plans on that field?

This planned for the second part of the game, the third part will be based on the conquest of Mars.

Hello bz249,

Not a stupid question at all, and certainly not highly confidential!

As Kalesin says, space stations will be the focus of part 2. The details are yet to be decided, since now I need to revise my original plans in order to include a competition aspect as well. I'll do that once part 1 gets released.

When you prepare Part 2, you will open thread for suggestions?

Indeed, yes. I'll open a thread for that and another one for suggestions regarding part 1.

Nice... Part two can be the most interesting part of the game (at least I hope that somehow I had to fight againt the decline of interest in space related stuff and the budget reductions and still produce result). :)

I am quite excited for the space stations.

NASA had plans for wet workshop Saturn second stage, Saturn third stage, and obviously the Skylab(s)! There were even plans (and one test flight) of the Manned Orbiting Lab with Gemini hardware. In theory, stations could be placed in low earth orbit (LEO), high earth orbit or lunar orbit, which would allow more detailed study of the effects of radiation long term outside of the Van Allen belts.

Stations are at risk of falling out of orbit gradually due to drag from the high atmosphere, but I am not sure how that might be integrated into gameplay. Same with duration missions. I am unsure how to 'gamify' missions that last more than one season, although I suppose that is currently done with some of the planetary probes, just not with man.

But really, I am painfully curious about what types of EOR missions are in store for us in the next update. Will it just be Apollo parts launched piece by piece, or gradual assembly of Gemini Direct hardware? There were technically the Langley Gemini LOR parts that could be assembled in EOR, but we have seen no signs of that yet at all.

Hello stratochief,

Notice that I posted some screenshots of the Gemini EOR mission last week, check this thread.
